11700k or 5800X for a gaming system?

Worschtsupp

Hey Guys,

i am looking to build myself a new system, but i'm having problems on deciding which parts to pick, especially on the CPU, as i want this to be an upgrade that will serve me well for the next couple of years.

It will be used primarily for gaming as of now, although i am planning to go to engineering school starting next year, so i might also have to do some work on it.

Just for clarification right away, i am not looking for a new Graphics Card. I currently have an ASUS ROG STRIX GTX 1070 8GB which i'm planning on using until (hopefully) the GPU prices drop in the future.

As the title says, i am looking at either a 11700k or a Ryzen 5800X. Where i live (Germany), i can get the i7 for about 340€ and the 5800X for about 370€.

For the intel configuration i would be going with an ASUS TUF Gaming Z590-Plus (210€) and for the AMD configuration with an ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F (190€). If you have any other suggestions please let me know, i figured i'd pick more "higher-end" boards for future proofness, but i unfortunately don't know that much about all that stuff. I only had good experiences with ASUS in the past which is why i picked those. Also, i like the Aura Lighting control (which i am planning to use with my other components) and i thought PCIe Gen4 support would be a nice thing to have in the future.

For Memory i would be going with 32GB of G.Skill Trident Z RGB (140-190€), although i have not yet decided at what frequency. I guess that will depend on what CPU/Board configuration i will choose.

As a power supply i chose the be quiet Straight Power 11 850W 80+ Gold.

Storage will be the two Samsung SSDs i am using in my current system.

So that would be the core parts i'm looking at. As you might be able to tell, i am not that up to date with the current hardware, or what would be best for my usecase, so i would really appreciate any help you guys can provide 🙂

frequency i recommend 3200 mhz cl16 but you may benefit from 3600 mhz cl16 depending on how heavy and what kind of engineering work youll be doing

for psu i recommend rev d.f 850w

TL didn't read - why not Intel 12th gen?

Post system specs on PCPP?

When you mention "future upgrades", 11th gen platform can be ignored. You cant upgrade to 12th gen without replacing the motherboard, 11900k is only slightly better than the 11700k, so it's pointless. It's more like 12600k/12700k versus 5800X here. I mention 3 CPUs because 12700k might be too expensive (I assume you will use DDR4, low speed DDR5 available today is not worth the high price) despite its performance advantage.

At this level, memory frequency for DDR4 should be 3600MHz minimum. How tight the timings are depends on what deals are available, lower is better but price goes up.

12th gen Intel CPUs are currently about 100€ more expensive as 11th gen, aswell as Z690 Mainboards (not necessarily 100€, but significantly). And as Jurrunio just said i will be using DDR4, so i didn't really see any benefit in spending the extra money on a 12th gen CPU (as i said, i'm not really up to date with the newest hardware).

Would you recommend an Intel 12th gen (even at the higher price) over a 5800X?

Edit: I also apologize if i'm aksing kind of stupid questions, but i'm really uncertain on what to pick and i want this system to be worth it's money and last me a while.

For gaming - 12th gen Intel  (12600K)

For content creation - Ryzen 5800X

Sorry for not reading the first post, I just can't really focus on long texts.

And high end DDR4 is as good as low/mid-end DDR5.
