Maybe I'm the only person out there looking for this feature, but...

Β

Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent bi-fold wallet that explicitlyΒ DOESN'T block RFID? (preferably with experimental/anecdotal evidence) (also, not a hard/metal wallet because back pocket and also electrodynamics)

Β

My work uses proximity cards for access, and I'm tall enough I don't need to take my wallet out of my pocket to tap the reader. Also Chicago has transit cards that are also proximity, so not having to remove my card to get on the train is preferred. Near as I can tell, as long as those two cards are the outer-most on either half, those are the cards that get read.

Many/most wallets I see on Amazon advertise RFID-blocking as a feature, to the point I'm worried that some don't advertise it but have it nonetheless, and I specifically want to make sure my cards can be read through it. Even in the city, I'm not concerned about people walking around with RFID readers to steal my money, so don't lecture me about that πŸ˜‰Β I accept the risk there.

Β

Loadout (for reference):

  • Cash (because food/hobbies require it sometimes)
  • Five (5) bank cards of various purposes
  • Transit card (same size as bank card)
  • Driver's License
  • Corporate ID (standard size)
  • A few Rx cards, etc.

Β

Amazon USA or other reasonable US vendor, please.

Just now, James Evens said:

Did you checked it even works like this?

In theory multiple RFID cards on the same frequency should result in nothing being readable. In practice there are reports of suessfull demonstration that you can still read it with generic hardware/reader if they are stacked.

I've been daily-driving the listed arrangement for ~6 years now and it works, but my current wallet is close to shot. Technology has moved in the >10 years since I originally bought it.

Β

My observation has been that RFID cards will block other RFID cards, so only the closest to the reader is picked up (at least in my experience, I'm not as sure theoretically).

Wallets are personal preference but I think some of Bellroy's offerings look good. They have some wallets that don't mention RFID like this one: https://bellroy.com/products/the-low/leather/ranger_green#slide-1

If you are into DIY you could just buy a RFID blocking wallet and then take an old, non-blocking wallet and then sew the old and new wallets together so that the new wallet is inside the old one. You can remove most of the insides of the old (outer) wallet, so that the combination doesn't become too thick.
Then put the cards you want to be readable via RFID in the outer part while the other cards can stay in the inner (protected) part.

That will probably look janky, but it might do the trick.

Most wallets are just plain leather and have no blocking capability. Also the ones that do block RFID its usually a thin piece of foil that can be easily removed without being noticed.

And as someone said before if you have 2 cards next to each other the front one usually blocks the back one. Although there are some cases where this isn't true but its a majority of the times it is.
