CPU running much higher than expected

Jagwar8

Hi everyone,

I recently built a PC with the Ryzen 5 5600x, and everything runs great except for the CPU. It will consistently reach temperatures of around 96C whenever I play any games, and will sometimes reach 85C while sitting idle on desktop tasks, usually sitting in the mid 60s with no tasks running whatsoever. I have tried everything, from adjusting curves to disabling PBO to buying an aftermarket fan, and nothing seems to have worked-in fact, with my aftermarket fan my temps are barely any better than with the stock cooler. I also added 3 exhaust fans, and have the cooler set in push-pull, with plenty of clearance all around the PC. I'm lost as to what the cause of this could be because despite hearing that Ryzen CPUs are rated for up to 90C it surely can't be good for it to constantly operate above that whenever operating any games. These temps are consistent across Hwinfo, Ryzen Master and Icue's temp tracker. Any help or explanation would be greatly appreciated.

I have the Corsair iCue 4000X, the exhaust fans I added were 3 more of the SP120 Elite fans that came with the case, 2 on top and one rear all exhaust

Which aftermarket CPU cooler did you get?

Did you double check that the CPU cooler is mounted properly?

If you take the CPU cooler off, you would disrupt the thermal paste, so recommended that you clean off the old paste, and apply a new coat.

I got the Arctic Esports 34 Duo, and I am almost certainly sure I mounted it correctly with the provided MX4 thermal paste after wiping off the original AMD stock thermal paste with rubbing alcohol.

a 5600X wouldn't get that hot with that beef of a heatsink.
It almost sounds like a contact problem if you're sitting at 85°C in idle.
A 5600G (same TDP as 5600X) can run at lower temps with a much smaller heatsink (Noctua L9a)
can you open your case and feel if the heatsink even gets any warm? check the heatpipes if you can touch them.

Both the heatsink and heatpipes feel completely cool to the touch, which is worrying, although the coooler does advertise "direct touch heatpipes". The cooler seems to be firmly on top of the CPU with no wiggling whatsoever, not sure what could be causing it to not contact correctly. The backplate is also firmly in place.

So how were temps with the stock cooler?

And I'm almost certain you didn't?

My suggestion: Check the mount, if maybe something from the mobo , like ram etc are blocking the cooler to make full contact...

And then remount anyways and make tripple sure its mounted properly and enough thermal paste is applied.

The temps with the stock cooler were around the same. I double checked and there is nothing near the cooler or CPU that could be interfering with their contact, there is nothing touching or blocking the fan or CPU. I would try to remount the cooler but I don't have any thermal paste I could use to do so so I'll have to hold off, and as I said the pipes and everything are firm and in place from what I can see as well as the backplate.

Check to make sure the cooler is fully and gradually tightened. What's the thermal paste spread look like?

Have you tried using default motherboard settings and an AMD power plan in Windows power options?

Definitely sounds like a mounting issue.

One friend of mine has a Ryzen 3600 with this exact CPU cooler, and another friend with a 5600X.

They are not seeing such high temperatures, PBO(2) enabled.

Make sure you are using the correct mounting studs for AMD / AM4.

Tighten the 4 screws in a gradual X-pattern.

I fully ensured all the screws and their orientations are correct, and I reinstalled the whole fan and retightened the screws. The temps did lower by about 10C but they still stay in the mid 70s to mid 80s under moderate load (the weather did also get significantly colder so that might be the main reason for the change), so I guess I'll just have to deal with it because I can't think of anything else it could be.

This. 96c is thermal throttling. There should be no reason a 5600x with that cooler reaches those temps unless the ambient temperature is really high.
