does the ryzen 5 5600g need drivers for integrated graphics to work?

It's just like a graphics card: it'll work with basic functionality out-of-the-box, and it works properly once you install the drivers. You can get the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's website when you get chipset, WiFi, and other basic drivers.

i'm building a pc for a friend and i realized i've never worked with integrated graphics before.

so i'm unsure if i need drivers or if they just work out of the box.

It is a graphics card, yes - but has nothing to do with the motherboard manufacturer.

If Intel graphics, go to intel. Nvidia, go to Nvidia. AMD, refer to @Tegneren's suggestion

It will give video out by default, using the Windows built-in/standard drivers.

Once you are in Windows though you'll want to download and install the drivers separately though, for the best performance/stability.

I said that's where you can download the drivers, which you can. I find it convenient to get all those drivers in one place. Yes, you can go to AMD for chipset and graphics drivers, then Intel for your WiFi and Bluetooth drivers, then Realtek for your audio drivers, etc.
