what should i do for my bro?

since im the "tech guy" im my family i was assigned to buy a laptop for my bro. his budget is 700 cad, but ive thought of buying him a pc made from used parts and a cheap Chromebook with linux installed, for him to use when outside of the house, where he could use the Chromebook locally when not using anything intensive but use the pc via virtual machine when using something intensive. my internet isnt good tho (40 mbs) so what yall suggest?

Personally I wouldn't depend on streaming the desktop over the internet all the time. It can work, and it can work well, but it's absolutely not a substitute for having a good local setup.

does the chromebook have to come out of the 700 canadian rubles too?  that won't leave much for a full desktop.  I'd pick one and put the whole budget in it rather than split it

Don't overcomplicate things, especially if you're the techy in the family who will have to deal with all the problems. Does your brother want a desktop or would he be happy with a laptop?

Just get a good used laptop. No need to make things that complex.

I cannot think of a reason why you would want to create a thin client sort of solution when you were tasked to simply "buy a laptop". You'll be spending countless hours over the course of the next few years maintaining this thing just so... he can so some web browsing and school work I presume. Yea, not even Governments will do something this complex for its employees so why should you? 

 

A good laptop and a docking station to hook up a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the laptop while at home would be as far as I would go. Anything more and you're just asking for more work.
