10600K to 10850K or 10900K, and is it worth it?

Go to solution Solved by Chris Pratt,

I'd personally just jump to an 11700K. It actually pretty much matches the multicore perf of a 10850K/10900K even with less cores, simply because the cores are more efficient, and you'll get better single core perf on top.

I'm getting a good upgrade deal to go from 10600K to either 10850K or 10900K (depending on availability). The mobo I use is Asus Prime Z490-M Plus and cooling it with a Lian Li Galahad 240, and yeah, no GPU, at least for now. I've been told by the shop owner that the mobo is good enough to handle the said processors, They will even try to sell you an elephant saying it's a monkey, so not really reliable, hence, turning to you guys' for some advice. The intended use is mostly Blender, and occasional light gaming.

Is it a worthy upgrade?

Maybe get a non k cpu instead if you can get them for cheaper than a k cpu since a 240mm is not gonna handle overclocks very well, esp with intel cpus being literal nuclear reactors

if your workload benefits higher core count and if you get said processors at a reasonable price

i'd say its worth it

if it was useful give it a like :) btw if your into linux pay a visit here

That's the thing... I don't know if having more cores will enhance my work experience. I'm often jumping between Photoshop, Illustrator and Blender. I've been told, having more cores doesn't help Photoshop, it's about clock speed. Don't know how much of it is true. People say more cores help using Blender, especially rendering. Between my 10700K and 10600K, I can't tell the difference. Give or take just a few seconds or minutes depending on different scene files. So I thought maybe because it's a difference of only 2 cores, the impact isn't much. Maybe going from 6 cores to 10 will make a big difference?

both of those 10 core SKUs have lower clock speed compared to 10600k but they both have higher boost clocks

in terms of blender performance if you are already satisfied with 10600k's performance then there is no reason to upgrade as the performance boost while noticeable is not huge

I'd personally just jump to an 11700K. It actually pretty much matches the multicore perf of a 10850K/10900K even with less cores, simply because the cores are more efficient, and you'll get better single core perf on top.

Thanks, Chris. I'll look into it.

If you need multi core/threading performance get the 10850k and call it a day. It's a great cpu, I'm switching back to one and ditching this 11700f soon

No cpu mobo or ram atm

I wouldn't bother; personal experience jumping from a 5ghz 8700k to a 10900k (which is in parity with the 11900k in games, when applied with a decent OC) there's almost no perceivable difference in games and most tasks that I do.
