Budget:  my budget is about £700 - I am purchasing within Jersey so if the part is sold by amazon I am not being charged VAT on items

Country: Jersey, UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: uni work (english lit student) and games

Other details I have a 60hz 1080p monitor to use and will be using my old 970 for its graphics card so am not expecting to run the lastest games at the best setings. Also looking at what would be a recomended mechanical keyboard, preferabley non garish looking and with red keys. Ideally I would be able to upgrade the card at some later date inorder to make this my primary build so space for upgrades is important

Here is the part list I have created so far https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/WRky68

Your build is quite an overkill for a 970, unless you intend to swap it quickly.

Besides, there is no point in paying more for unlocked CPU while choosing motherboard that cannot overclock.

I'd recommend i5-10400f + cheap tower cooler (maybe 11400f), a B460 board and 16GB of 2666 low latency RAM. This setup will be enough should you choose to upgrade to rtx 3060/ti/Rx 6600xt graphics card.

As I said before the 970 is a place holder. I don't have the money to get a new graphics card so looking to get the best I can get within my budget for the other parts so that a new graphics card would be worth putting into this build when I have the money. Thank you for pointing out the motherboard issue, I would still like to have the flexability to overclock at a later date so would appreciate a motherboard recomendation

thank you for the tip with the wd black. I am wondering how much of an upgrade the cpu would be compared to the one in the build I had posted, what would be the benefits?

5600x is faster CPU, More energy efficient, Have PCIe gen 4 support.

Overall, Build you put together is very unbalanced. But yes, You can build system on that CPU, There's not too much differences, But with much 5600x you are getting better system.

This.

@op - if 11400f is not enough for your future upgrades, 5600x is your best bet. It's overclockable as well, and on B550 boards too. You can get a a cheaper drive if you want to save a bit.

This drive is on sale right now and it's such great value, I don't think saving on it is worth anything right now.

Great value in what? Compared to a cheaper NVMe drive you likely won't even notice the difference if you're just gaming. See link below ⬇️. And besides, they did bait-n-switch SN550 components, I'd stay away from their drives for the time being.

They did on SN550, But there haven't been anything on SN750, Yes, In gaming you might can't notice any different, But when there is sale and you can buy one better, What's the point of saying no? SN750 have been really good drives even for price it was going days ago...

Can you be sure they didn't change SN750 components? They didn't announce it with SN550 either. Why else would it be discounted over 50% during chip shortage? I personally would risk getting QLC (less durable) drive to gain speed i probably won't even notice. But it's up to OP anyways.

Because there is ongoing uproar about SN550, I'm sure some guys would have tested SN750 to find out whats going on with it, Since there is no word about this model, I doubt there is chances of it's parts also being changed.
