Upgrading my machine to run 3 Series cards efficiently.

Enhein

Budget (including currency): Under $1000 USD

Country: United States

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Everything.

Other details: Upgrading my current machine, though realistically I am just upgrading the motherboard and the processor. I am currently looking at either a Ryzen 7 5800x or an Intel i7 11700k.I am very open to suggestions. Current build below.

Basically I am trying to limit the bottlenecking on my PC for games. I used to play warzone, but I get a LOT of stuttering and FPS fluctuation in game with 100% CPU usage. Now I mainly play Generation Zero, and Final Fantasy 14. Also, I'd like to finish playing Detroit: Become Human. It ran terrible. I just no longer want to deal with getting a game for it to run like garbage. Looking for input on a good processor and Mobo. System is always wired so I don't need wireless connectivity. so a cheaper motherboard is fine. Please forgive me, I haven't kept up with tech as much as I should... Considering I just landed a job working as a computer repair tech in a govt. job. oof. Assuming a B550 over an x570, unless there's benefits I am not aware of. I play most games at 1440 and run a Samsung LC27G5XT. The 3060 is also "temporary" as im on a few lists to getting a 3070 ti and a 3080, whichever pops first. Trying to keep future options open, without going absolutely wild. Looking to buy in the next month or so. POSSIBLY a ram swap to 32GB, taking suggestions on that as well. Thanks all!

Current Build: image.png.df28b155edc1987ff14262a3a4f30fce.png

PSU: Corsair GS600

Just upgrade the cpu to a 9700k or 9900k and overclock it instead of jumping to a new platform which is about to be obselete anyways

If you dont wanna overclock just get the non k variants

Thanks for the quick reply! Definitely appreciate your advice! I'm currently running an i5 8400. I don't mess with overclocking anymore, and from some research I was doing, there was almost no benefit moving to the 9 series. The i5 8400 actually performed better. But the 11, and the ryzen 5800 were massive increases over everything. Just looking for something to hold me over for a year or 2. The new job is a massive pay increase, (going from 30k a year to 63k), so I wont need to struggle trying to upgrade anymore.

The 9900k is quite literally double the speed of your current cpu. Are you sure that wouldn't be of any benefit?

Just because you have all the money doesnt mean you should just start spending on things that arent totally neccesary, who knows maybe you lose your job or something

An i5 8400 should be ok for 3000 series gpus as long as you play on high settings that put more load on the gpu rather than the cpu, heck ive even heard of ppl gaming at 4k with a core 2 duo of all things, thats because 4k is more taxxing on the gpu rather than the cpu

@emosunI am not 100% sure, which is why I am coming to all of you, :D. I will do a bit of research right now on it actually and come back in a few with my findings.

@Somerandomtechyboi, It is quite possible I have some skewed settings in my video settings in game I suppose. I can look into it for sure. And you are right about things happen. And I def dont plan on throwing a ton of money all over. Just stating I have been living on the one salary, and moved to a higher one. I live comfortable on what I was making, and the one thing I told myself I was doing was pumping some money into my PC, which is what I do after work mainly. All other needs are fullfilled.

Then if all your needs are fullfilled id suggest saving up some money so incase you lose your job or something then youll have a safety net that you can fallback to

@SomerandomtechyboiDefinitely appreciate the advise, but I do have a hefty savings that I am not taking into consideration for my build. I could go buy a beefy overpriced prebuilt. I pretend I don't have a savings so I don't dip into it, but it's enough to live off for about 2 years right now. Honestly the goal for my savings is to hit 150k. The job is pretty secure however, govt position that I have been at for 10 years unionized. I just moved from the public safety department to IT. They ended up scouting me and offered me a job there. Its kinda like car mechanics now a days, part swappers.

Agree with @Somerandomtechyboi

Try to save up some

But, if you still insist try this

Just Try and get the desired gpu First and put it to your existing or upgraded system, and see if you happy and all the things you do work "flawlessly" with it

If not then you can upgrade it as you wish

Also Just to heads up, consider

upgradings the psu regardless of if you're upgrading or switching to a new platform

@SomerandomtechyboiPlease don't take anything as a flex either. I actually value your opinion as it shows more on the caring side than someone trolling or throwing terrible advise. Just explaining my thought process.

@FreakwiseThe desired GPU is indeed the 3070 TI or 3080, but realistically, we all know it will be awhile before I get my hands on one. I refuse to pay scalping prices. My concern has been the 100% cpu usage, and 40-80% GPU usage. I do see the i9 is quite an increase however, I was incorrect. @Somerandomtechyboi @emosunimage.png.35e344a9f6c0bf282aa13fed7312ee13.pngimage.png.a1524093036097c4eac7c3864f40473c.png

I think upgrading to a 9700(k) will be enough to last till next next gen

bottleneck calculators should not be used.

i5 8400 will be fine with 3060 on gpu bound games. on cpu hevay games like GTAV, warzone for example it will struggle.

you can upgrade to i7 8700(k), 9900(k)f

or swithc platofrm completely and go for Ryzen

@SavageNeo Understood. I guess considering the way warzone and Detroit has run with my 3060, I've been looking for a solution. It appears moving to the 9900 will possibly alleviate the high CPU usage, and it's less expensive than I was planning on spending, so I can upgrade my PSU and ram with it for now. Find something with better timings and add 16GB

If you're getting a lot of frame stutters, I would recommend just throwing in 9900K. I hear warzone will happily eat 8 cores for lunch lol. 9700k is also an option, but the lack of hyperthreading might not resolve the stutters you are seeing. I play final fantasy 14 and when I upgraded to 8 cores (5800x), it was a significantly smoother experience. Frame rates about the same though, but frame pacing was way better.

@emosunGTAV runs fine on my PC. CPU hits around 75%. As of now, it's quite literally the only 2 games I want to play at the moment, story of my life. I resubbed to FFXIV because I was so aggravated with the way these games are running.

i would upgrade the psu. not because of the wattage, but because its primary topology is doupel forward, which likely coil whines with the 3060.

16gb ram is fine
