I want to build myself a new PC for use with graphic design software (CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, etc) - strictly 2D stuff like logos, signs, banners, posters.  I'm currently using an older gaming rig and it does OK, but after building a couple new PCs for my kids, I'd like to build one for myself.  This machine won't see any gaming use - I've already got that covered on another machine - this is strictly for my work and my hobby designs.  I'd also like to stick with a Ryzen CPU/APU.

Right now, all for around $350 (CAD), I can get either an R5 5600G, R7 3700X or R5600X.

Where I'm struggling is that if I go with something other than the APU, I'll need to move the 1050ti from my current machine and leave it without a GPU (i5-9400F - so it needs a DGPU to display).  If possible, I'd potentially look to sell the existing machine complete with the GPU and get back some or most of the cost.

My instinct tells me that this setup here will be just fine, but I'm not experienced enough yet to assume I've thought of everything!  Any input would be appreciated!

The 5600G is something like a 5600 "non-x" version, so it falls in between the performance of the R5 3600 and the 5600X. As for graphics designing, any of the ones you take will be good, but if you think that the 3700X has more cores so productivity might be faster, well..

Processing many tasks at the same time sounds like it would be much faster, but the problem with having lots of cores is, that the more Cores a CPU has the slower the individual cores are usually clocked.

Here’s an example: A Single-Core CPU that clocks at 5 GHz would have roughly the same performance as a Dual-Core CPU that clocks at 2,5 GHz (on each core).

Well, then let’s just get a CPU with the highest core clock and as many cores as possible and all should be great, right?

Unfortunately, since most Software makes heavy use of only a single Core and isn’t coded in a way to be able to handle lots of Cores, we should be leaning towards higher clocked CPUs and not lots of Cores. Hence I would still go for the newer 5000-series CPUs.

The 5600X is the best, but if you are concerned about a gpu, well.... 5600G then.

But try to get the 5600x, or maybe in APUs, maybe the 5700G.

Good otherwise both yours and @Somerandomtechyboi's recommendation are good

Thanks @Somerandomtechyboi and @Carbonado!  It sounds like I'm pretty close already - but I have one other option that I didn't mention.

It sounds like the 5600X might be the best choice for this build, and while I'm definitely not opposed to going with the APU - would a cheap/old GPU thrown in with the 5600X so it can display actually make things worse?

Specifically - I can get a brand new GTX 710 from my local Best Buy for $80.  All I want is a nice 1440p picture, which I assume would be OK from the HDMI port on the GTX 710 - but would such and old/low-end GPU actually hurt the performance of the rest of the system?  I have no experience whatsoever in this area!

Nope, it wouldn't. But just make sure you select your CPU as the encoder/exporter while editing and designing!

That's a bit higher than what i would go for tbh, i suggest search for some better deals if you going to get that...

Maybe try getting a gt 1030 instead?

Hey @Carbonado and @Somerandomtechyboi - I got my parts and finished the build last week.  Thanks a lot for the suggestions and support.  This thing runs like a dream so far.  Thanks to the other members who posted, too.@somerandomguy12

Looking sick my dude! Enjoy it!! What GPU did you end up getting?

@Carbonado That's the 1050 ti from my previous machine.  On a hunch, I cracked open a really old case I had in the basement to see if I could harvest anything from it and I found it still had a 2TB HDD in it (which is now in the new machine for mass storage) and a Radeon 7670 GPU.  That's now in my previous machine and it still runs fine and is fit to try and sell, and the new build got the more recent GPU!  Thanks again for the advice!

GT 730 would probably be worse than a 5600G integrated.
