New Home Lab, recommendations

MrXeno

Hey all

I have been planning on upgrading my home server lab from a single Lenovo M73 pc to two new DIY servers.

But I am unsure of waht to get in terms CPU's

I have gotten this far
I5-11400

Ryzen 5 3600

Both are at a great price. I also need to think about how much power they draw as well powerbill is never a fun thing to pay for plus I have one outlet for the server's.

which one of those would you people recommand? or if you have a better option let me know!

I have also been thinking about if I need Docker or Proxmox or a mix. I will be running my website's on the servers as I am tired of paying per month for hosting for a hobby project...

plus I will be running a NAS later on with a game server or two plus 2-3 DB's on the site for some project.

Note. I will be running a mumble server as well for some Starbase faction voice chat

What would you people recommend for this case?

Both are about the same. i5 has a igpu, so thats what id pick, but ryzen has ecc support. They should both use about the same power.

How many drives do you need in your case?

Hmm good question. Around 20-30 TB ish.
I'm not biggest data horder. Most of the space I will need is for wordpress and DB plus some small Proxmox stuff else 20-30 TB should be fine

Id probably get something like a mitx case here if you want to save space, how about a node 304 or simmilar?

THen get something like 4x12tb hdds in a raid z1. Id run proxmox on the host, and run docker on proxmox.

Ah oki yeah that makes sense. I need to learn Docker first but it shouldn't be to hard just takes time really.
I will look into that thanks!

Keep in mind if youre doing clustering you'll be limited to something like Proxmox which you mentioned. VMware will not properly support mixed CPU's in a cluster configuration.
