Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading considering the current specs that I have on my computer. First off I would like to say I'm pretty green when it comes to PCS and building them, So lately I have been considering doing a complete upgrade to amd ryzen 5 3600 but my current build has a Intel i7 3930k with a gtx 1070 and when I look around it seems both cpu's have similar specs but im a noob when it comes to what is better, so im wondering if I should wait on the upgrade and just overclock my current CPU and wait till I cant run a game or software i need because currently I have no problems running games or software I just thought my current PC is eight years old and was time to upgrade. I am a full time college student with my concentration in gaming development so I will be needing a good PC.

If that cpu is no longer delivering the performance you need, you can upgrade, you will need new ram, mobo and the cpu. The performance increase is big. For ram I would suggest 3200mhz CL16, if you can get higher mhz and lower CL, around the same price, that would be better. You will be able to reuse the graphics card and any harddrives you have. Build your current system in pcpartpicker, so we can suggest parts easier.

Go for a Ryzen 7 3700X, instead of the Ryzen 5 3600. Re-use your GTX 1070 in your new build/upgrade. Mount the extra 120mm fan at the back of the case, as an exhaust fan.

The case is going to give you some assembly instructions. Make sure you have that quick start/setup guide and your motherboard manual out at all times. Don't forget to make sure the rgb cable coming from all of the fans is connected to the Corsair Lighting Node Core, that's included at the back of the case. Connect that to one of the motherboard's RGB headers. The actual fan cables connect to the fan headers on the motherboard (not the cpu_fan header, because that's for the Noctua cpu cooler fan).

I used to recommend the Hyper 212 series coolers, but they have a horrible mounting and cooling system compared to products made by be quiet! and Noctua.

I've never used Arctic Freezer or anything like that, so I can't recommend them either, sadly. I've literally only "used them" in PC Building Simulator, and I don't even know why it doesn't have the Hyper 212 models as entry level coolers instead. lol!

OP is pretty new to building, and I didn't want them to go through the possible hassle of updating the BIOS.

Also, there's literally nothing wrong with the Ryzen 3000 series cpu's. Ryzen 7 3700X beats the 5600X in productivity. OP was already considering the 3600, so to go from that to 3700X is already a good step up. I would've recommended the 5800X tbh, but it gets super hot easily, because AMD rushed the 5000 series launch.

Definitely bring that SSD over to the new build. When you format your build for the first time, in custom install, delete the partitions, and keep that as like a secondary game drive or maybe have it be used as a game development drive. That way you can get quick and easy access to your files, without having to scavenge through folders.

The storage. Samsung isn't worth it, if you're going to go over budget (or be too close to your budget anyways). You already have a 500GB SSD that you can use for games or other things too, that you put in another post. What made you go for that case too?

List is private. 😕

For the SSD, definitely not the QVO. It doesn't move large files (like big games) as fast as it should (that's probably why the 870 EVO 2TB SSD is so expensive). The WD Blue SSD is a solid choice, and doesn't compromise on large file transfers.

Maybe something like this?

I like this build but im a little scared of messing up trying to update the BIOS i heard you can brick it if you dont do it right, plus this is my first build and would like to just put it together and have it work.

What about this? I know I keep going back to this case, but if you want RGB, this is a solid way to go.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xHx8Dc

You can alternatively not do RGB, and go for performance instead...

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qWZVkX

(Front case fan would be moved to top-rear of case, as an exhaust fan. The 2 140mm fans would be mounted at the front, as intake fans.)

If you end up going for this case, make sure you get a 120mm fan (to be mounted at the back of the case, as an exhaust fan).

I like the second build better i don't really care for RGB, and you think the DDR-4 3600 is necessary or DDR-4 3200 will do fine

You get a slight performance boost with 3600MHz RAM, but not too much (I think it's like 5-10 fps increase). However, if you're a little too close to your budget, go for 3200MHz RAM. 3200MHz RAM is still fast for 2021.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rRJJcT

Also, since you're moving that one 500GB ssd over from your other build, you can actually double your ram and increase your psu wattage, all while bringing just the 2.5" SSD down to 1TB, if you wanted to.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GCy6Jf

EDIT: A third, more balanced option.

16GB RAM, still 2TB SSD (just 1tb nvme ssd + 1tb 2.5" ssd), and 650W 80+ Gold PSU.

Brings it down to $1057.
