I think you're wrong and trying to justify the CEO isn't special for some self superiority complex or something. All the info you said has come from the same source, your ass, and you can't seem to take view the other perspective. It's simply I'm right you are wrong now we must belittle them. It would be different if you said hey guys I've personally worked with Lisu Su and Antonio Neri for the past 3 years and here is what I have to say. I would be a lot more receptive and actually curious but you have zero credentials or sources to show how you know exactly how the CEOs of tech companies operate and what they do everyday day to day.

The thing is that there is no other perspective to view this from. There is just a right way to view things, and a wrong way to view things.

Saying that Lisa Su is the reason for Zen's success makes no sense because she was not the CEO until like halfway through development of that. Zen was in the design phase in 2012. Lisa became CEO in 2014. Zen was in a working state (almost complete) in 2016.

Saying that Bob Swan is the reason for Intel's manufacturing struggles makes no sense because they started having issues long before Bob became the CEO. Intel 10nm was scheduled for 2015. Bob Swan was appointed CEO in 2018.

 

I don't have to "view things from another perspective" because those other perspectives are complete and utter bullshit.

No it doesn't. I have no idea which posts you are reading but I never said anything of that sorts.

What I said was that AMD did not stumble onto some good CPU. What I said was that engineers at AMD and TSMC created good CPUs, not Lisa Su. Lisa Su wasn't even CEO until halfway through the development of Zen, so giving her credit for that makes no sense. The credit for AMD's good processors (starting with Zen) should go to their and TSMC's engineers, not Lisa Su. It's the engineers that made Zen happen, not the management.

The primary roles of a CEO at a company as large as AMD are:

1) Be the primary communicator between the board of directors and the operations team. If the board of directors want to do something, they tell the CEO which then tells the other C-suites such as the COO and CFO.

2) Be the face of the company. This role includes making public appearances like a trade shows but also things such as read information at shareholder meetings.

3) Some very high level decisions alongside the other members of the operations team (AMD has 20 people on that team when you include Lisa). Things such as come up with or approve company policies.

4) Be responsible for the day to day operations when the board of directors aren't involved. The CEO is responsible for making sure the plans presented by the board of directors are being carried out and followed.

It was not a bad CEO that hurt Intel. It was issues with their new manufacturing process. No matter which CEO they had, they would have had those issues. 

Also, I assume you're referring to Bob Swan when you say a bad CEO, he did not do a bad job. ~15% growth in stock prices and a ~20% increase in profits is not too bad over the course of about 2 years. I certainly wouldn't say he hurt the company.

Just because a company is doing well or poorly does not mean it is the CEO that made that happen. 

They might not have to do with it, but a good CEO certainly helps. Intel had Paul Ottelini during it's golden times. Lisa Su came and the fortunes of AMD would change. Similar for Andy Grove, Satya Nadella, Steve Jobs etc.

Well it's not the CEO who make sure the engineers have facilities, tools, knowledge, support and other team members. At least not in a company as big as AMD.

For things like making sure the engineers have tools knowledge and support, it's the line management/first level managers. For making sure they got facilities, it's often a middle manager (like the regional manager), depending on the nature of the facilities that are necessary. If it's a really big decision (like when Intel recently decided to build a new factory) it was up to the board of directors as well as the C-suites to approve of it (not all at once, but as part of the long and tedious approval processes that exists within the companies). 

You have to remember that AMD has over 12,000 employees. The CEO is in close contact with like 20-50 people. The other ~11,950 employees are managed by other people.

It's not up to Lisa Su to make sure AMD's engineers are educated and have access to the tools and support they need. That might work for a company with like 20 employees, but it doesn't scale much past that, and it certainly doesn't scale to 12,000 employees.

 

I recently went on a 1 week course for firewalls because I felt I needed more knowledge regarding PAN-firewalls. I didn't contact the CEO of the company I work for to get that approved. I contacted my boss. When my regional office needed a new office building we didn't contact the CEO, we contacted the regional manager to get it approved.

Lisa Su is important to AMD, but all this nonsense you and poochyena are saying about how she is responsible for educating the engineers, how AMD wouldn't have gotten bankrupt without her, etc really is just nonsense. Same for the people saying Bob Swan is the reason why Intel struggled with 10nm. Statements like these shows a fundamental ignorance about corporate structures.

Lisa Su wasn't even CEO when AMD started working on Zen, so I think it's mind blowingly stupid to attribute that to her.

AMD started development of Zen after they had hired Jim Keller, which happened in 2012. The team was also headed by Suzanne Plummer, and Michael Clark was the chief architect of Zen (I am saying this so that people don't start circle jerking about how Jim Keller saved AMD).

If your sports team has over 12,000 different athletes and won because of a strategy and training routine that was put in place several years before the new coach got the job, and the coach doesn't talk or even meet the athletes then yes, I don't think the coach should be quoted as the reason for winning the game.

 

What you and others seems to not understand is that massive corporations like AMD are not structured nor do they work the same way as some school sports team that has like 30 people in it are.

It is a mistake to compare AMD to a sports team because they are not at all on the same scale of things.

Before this turns into a back and forth argument between you and I, I'd like for you to go back and read my previous replies and the posts I have replied to. I think both you and I agree with each other and that we'd be on the same side if you saw the comments I replied to. Comments like how Lisa Su is the reason why AMD didn't go bankrupt, how Lisa Su is the reason Zen turned out to be good or that Bob Swan is the reason why Intel has struggled with 10nm.

I guess the best way to describe it would be, there's a difference between being responsible and taking responsibility. CEOs are always the latter, not always the former.
