Computer Seizes up Please HALP

Go to solution Solved by CommanderAlex,

Welcome to the forums!!!

There was an issue awhile back with B550 and X570 motherboards where USB dropout would occur and was patched with a BIOS update. Have you tried updating the BIOS yet?

Hello all, I have an issue that I just can't figure out what is wrong. I have tried many troubleshooting tips and nothing has worked. So the issue just started recently, I can't say exactly when it started but my computer will randomly play the device disconnect/connect sound and than freeze up.

It won't freeze up completely but it will freeze for 5 sec and than you can hear sound and freeze again. The computer is completely unresponsive during this time. The only thing I can do is hard reset my computer which I know isn't very good for it.

This issue only seems to happen when I'm playing a game, I can leave my computer running idly or browse the internet and it never freezes. This led me to think it was my new SN550 that I just installed about 20 days ago " If I was to guess i'd say the issue started a week ago" I have the SN550 connected to my second M.2 drive on my board with my SN750 occupying the first.

I removed the SN550, started up a game and started playing. Nothing happened for about an hour and them bam, same noise played and computer froze. I tried SFC /scannow which did find some issues but fixed them. I started up a game again and played for almost 4 hours so thinking the issue was fixed I reinstalled the SN550 and went to bed. Started up my pc this morning, loaded up a game and within 30 minutes of playing it froze again after playing the sound.

I am at a loss as to what could be causing this issue, I have done many tests through my BIOS to check RAM health and SSD health. Both are good. It's just strange that all of a sudden it would start doing this.

I have tried looking in event viewer but haven't seen anything that jumps out, the most recent occurrence happened at 8:26AM see attached photo.

The device disconnect sound seems like it would point to a problem with a USB device connected to the system.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

That error has nothing to do with anything you said here. Most Ryzen systems have issues with USB devices disconnecting randomly and to surprise nobody, AMD hasnt been able to fix it completely.

I looked in event viewer because I've tried disconnecting everything except keyboard but to no avail. I've even tried other keyboards. Also that doesn't explain the freezing issue. Why would my computer completely freeze up upon a USB device disconnecting and reconnecting. Also I don't get any notifications as to a device being disconnected.

I have but perhaps I should rollback and redo it. May not have installed correctly. I'll update you on that.

You can do that, but I wouldn't recommend rolling it back for stability. I'd update with the latest non-Beta BIOS and report back.

Well I updated to the latest non-beta BIOS and everything seems to be fine, was able to play a game without my computer freezing up. If it acts up sometime I'll be sure to report back but for now it appears to be fixed.

Thanks for the help and the info

Well, two days later and it happened again. Guess this is going to be an ongoing issue with AMD huh. I've been reading more on it and they don't seem to have a fix for it even though it's been going on for over a year. I hate forcing my computer to shutdown every time it happens because I know it puts a strain on your system.

Yeah, I've heard that there isn't a completely solid fix yet for this USB connectivity issue.

That sucks, makes me kinda regret going with AMD

Yeah, great performance compared to Intel but stability is just not the likes of the stable Intel platform that has been out on the market for a long time (Intel Core series). You have the latest chipset drivers installed? Download them from the AMD Drivers Download page.

Yep, I made sure everything was up to date when I did the BIOS

Hmm, it was worth a shot just to see if the chipset drivers were.

Return the board and get a completely different one (different brand etc), ultimately this is a motherboard issue, you might be more lucky with another one… imo!

i know it sucks but what else do you want to do… it should honestly just work, especially with the troubleshooting you did.

Well I contacted MSI today to see what could be done. More than likely I'll have to RMA it.

not ideal, but if its your only option?

when and where did you buy it?

i mean i would be really surprised if msi can "fix" this… more likely they'll just send you the same board - and then any options to return the item are probably expired.

bought it last year so it's definitely out of the return window. RMA would be my only option besides just buying a new board outright.

oh i see i thought its new. well then rma is probably best (in germany we have something called warranty, you just send it back to the seller and get a new item, well ideally, technically they can also initiate an rma instead)
