Computer Scientists at Columbia University Invent Technique to Encrypt Photos Stored in the Cloud

Okay so this seems like they are just trying to get notoriety the more I glance over the paper.  This seems more and more impractical than I first thought..Here is a quote from their paper

For example, one ESP photo in the graph showing JPEG quality 100 size overhead has a distinctly lower file size of about 2.4 times the source image file size, compared to the average of 6.5 times, because it is a high resolution photo of the night sky with nearly no stars visible, making it an almost solid black JPEG photo.

I'm sorry, but if this is true this is just stupid.  Their encryption takes on average 6.5 times the space.  Even their low quality setting appears to create sizes of 1.5x higher

I agree with your last statement though. What's the point of this? Seems like a hell of a lot of work just to get the same results as encrypting a zip file and uploading that. Way to over-engineer a solution.

Some cloud services don't allow you to upload files they don't recognize as valid images.

 

This is also less clunky (at least in theory) than zipping your images; you don't really want to have to download, unzip and open an image every time you want to look at what's on your cloud storage. With this system you're not even required to enter an archive password.

For services like google photos you can't upload a zip file only pictures. On a side note Apple just helped a ton of pedophiles out! Great work Apple

Also good luck with phone actually being useful in that state... I've tried and it was garbage experience. Using iPhone was second best way to get rid of Google's nonsense and still have somewhat good or at least better privacy. Until they start doing this shit.

Blame the devs who are way too afraid to open up the source code.  Im pretty detached from gapps anyway, only thing holding me back is the crappy app of the university which cannot be downloaded as an apk.....

Yes but there is no point in using Google Photos anymore since it shares the same storage as Google Drive.

You could do exactly the same thing using zip files.

I have and I basically never found what I need on F-Droid. Not to mention other commercial apps whining over unlocked bootloader (not even rooted phone) which totally killed any wish to deal with flashed phones. Or endlessly fiddle with stupid Magisk. I just don't have the nerves to deal with any of it after trying it several times

I could run apps even on Galaxy S2 running Jelly Bean 4.1, but it freaked out when I installed LineageOS based Android 10 on it. Same with Xiaomi Mi5. Originally it had Android Oreo 8.1 and was whining over LineageOS (I think it was Android 11 already) because of unlocked bootloader. It's where I lost my patience and just bought an iPhone. It'll soon be 3 years and I'm still getting updates, full ones as well as security. Don't really see the need to unlock or flash it to stay up to date so I got rid of that problem entirely. Flashing Androids was fun when there was none of this shit and they worked without problems. Now all the DRM and whiny apps totally ruined it.

Now you're getting a bunch of things mixed up. Unlocking a boot loader and using F-Droid are different things. You can use F-Droid with the stock ROM and locked bootloader if you want.

Well it still would have to be implemented on the apps you use....and the fact the images take up more room, I would still say it is quite clunky.  Literally this one they admit you would have to effectively use just the thumbnails to scan through images on the cloud (because thumbnails only take 250ms to download and decode)...so there is quite a bit of overhead and if you try loading up to view 20 thumbnails, it would take 5 seconds...which I think is quite clunky.

 

Also, while you don't have to put in an archive password, the way they transfer to other devices the keys to unlock is rather clunky...vs something like signal which has you take a screen shot of the barcode and it works, this you have to still type in words appearing on the screen (I think...I forget and don't want to read their paper again)

It's simple. You're thinking about security for the user (unlocked Android 11 is more secure than locked Android 6), but app developers are thinking about their security. If you got a locked bootloader, you might be circumventing things like DRM they have implemented, and they wouldn't want you doing that.

I agree with you. If you are a normie then F-Droid is not for you. That doesn't make it worthless though.

By the same logic, things like the control panel in Windows is "worthless" because it doesn't appeal to normies. Just like F-Droid doesn't appeal to normies.

It depends on your use case. 

I've seen plenty of people who doesn't seem to have that many issues going without Google Play services. Some popular apps like Facebook might not work but those users don't really want Facebook anyway, so nothing of value was lost to them.

The summary of the report that OP posted is misleading. This does not work with the thumbnail previews provided by Google Photos. If it did, then the files could not be encrypted.

With "Easy Secure Photos", your device takes the full size image, generates a small thumbnail image, uploads that to Google Photos, and then when your app wants to display a thumbnail it downloads the small image and displays that.

For the students that wrote the paper, it was probably a fun experiment, and it's really impressive that they managed to make it resistent to further compression, but for end-users this is absolutely and utterly pointless. It offers zero benefits compared to what was already possible. They are just re-inventing the wheel.

Well they are doing it via having it store effectively 2x the data (after going to the cloud).  The image though is as they say on average 6x the size...to me this seems nothing more than a term paper that they are trying to tout
