5930k Upgrade or No?

I am Running a 5930k right now and I was wondering if the 6900k or 6950x would be a better option, or just not worth the money. On paper, both processers are much faster than my i7, however I mostly game at 1080/1440p. Would it be smarter to just save for a platform upgrade down the line? Thanks.

no.  A single generation upgrade is not worth it.

(Yeah, going from DDR3 to 4 and a couple other things would make it a bigger upgrade than most, but still not worth it.)

Edit:  The 7th Gen i9's that linus reviewed a bit ago may be worth it (Or at least closer to worth it) if you get a good Mobo price.  200ish bucks for the 8/16 i9 7820 is good.

X99 is already DDR4 lol

Actually no, because 6xxx CPUs on LGA2011-3 can't overclock anymore due to an exploit. In games where single core performance matters, an overclocked 5930k wont be behind the 6900k or 6950X. Still not as good for productivity thogh

When it comes to gaming, the highest possible CPU speed (ghz) you can get over a few cores.

The 5930k is probably the best option on the X99 (socket 2011-3) platform.

Most higher end CPU's for the same socket will take a hit in speed at the expense of additional cores.

There is also a large number of Xeon CPU's that would work with that chipset. But once again, these are better for productivity than gaming.

I have a X99 system I use for a home lab. I currently have a Xeon E5-2678 v3. It's 12 cores/24 threads, 2.5ghz base, 3.3ghz turbo. Picked it up off Ali Express for just under $100 USD.

Here is a couple lists of Xeon CPU's that you can have a look through. As a disclaimer, please check compatibility with your motherboard if you find a CPU of interest.

E5 1660 v3 and 1680 v3 both 8c/16t, unlocked multiplier, work on x99 and good ones can probably get to 4.8ghz

I had similar thoughts about 2 years ago. I was still on my 5820k and was also looking for 6900k as an upgrade. But those I could find were way to expensive (wasn't looking to buy used) to the point where going to current gen would only have been ~200$ more (CPU, Mobo, RAM). So I decided to go current gen because it was overall the better choice in terms of performance and cost imo.
