1440p vs 1080p

KingBlue72

I'm looking into building a high-end system to last me for some years to come and along with it I'm thinking of a new monitor aswell.

So, the question is do I go for 1440p or do I stick with 1080p to squeeze high framerates at high settings for some years to come? Is there a noticable difference in quality? Is it worth it?

personally i's say yes. nothing will ever get me back to 1080p.

catch is that i mostly play sightseeing titles, and only the occational FPS round with friends only to have fun without tryharding or such, so high framerate isn't really what matters to me.

what games do you play the most?

I moved to 2560x1600 (RIP 16x10) in 2010 and would never, ever go back to such a low resolution like 1080p.

However, its what you value more in games and what kind of GPU you can afford. If you essentially only use the computer for highly competitive games, there might be some value in a high end 240Hz+ 1080p panel, however if that isn't your style, you really may benefit from a modern high resolution display. I actually moved to 3440x1440 21:9 displays about 4 years ago and will never go back to 16x9.

Your GPU also plays a huge role in this. 1440p isn't that demanding these days but if you can only afford, for instance, a 3060, you may want to stick with 1080p. If a 3070/3080 is more what you had in mind, please don't hook a 1080p panel up to it!

TL;DR 1080p is for cheap setups or those only interested in high FPS in competitive titles. IMO, it died 10 years ago. I feel so constrained on a PC with such a low resolution.

1080p in a 22 - 24 inch display will be as sharp as a 1440p at 27/32 inch.

if you valued picture quality and wanna have 27 incher go for 1440p.

gaming in 1080p can give you +20-30% more fps.

But with dlss or fsr you can game at lower resolution without getting crap pictures.

Basically 1080p on a smaller screen and then 1440p on a larger.  Given the distance is the same.

If you want a bigger picture, go tighter resolution so the pixels don't get overly large and they detract from the visuals.

Don't go 1440p just go to 1440p, as 1080p and 1440p on the same 24" monitor aren't too noticeably different.  they are on a 32" for example tho.

Unless you're a competitive esports player (CS:GO, Valorant, Apex, etc.) or you're GPU is a GTX 1060 or lower, go 1440p, it's well worth it. It's a lot sharper, especially at higher screen sizes. Now, if the question comes down to 1080p 144HZ or 1440p 60Hz, get the 1080p panel. However, if the question is 1080p 240Hz vs 1440p 144Hz, get the 1440p panel. You want something higher FPS than 60, but IMO unless you're a higher ranked esports player, much above 120Hz isn't really worth it.

I think what you're leaving out which is the biggest factor for me is screen real-estate. If you do anything at all outside of gaming this makes a huge difference... Then again i'm all about screen real-estate. I like lots of pixels and lots of monitors.

Exactly why I like my Ultrawide.  But I was just explaining the pixel thing.

Totally agree about the real estate aspect.

I play a lot of fast paced shooters so I went for a Ultrawide 1080p 144Hz. I run a midrange card (2070 Super) so I wanted to actually reach 144fps on modern titles. That being said, since DLSS has released and improved I've been regretting my 1080p purchase because the performance issues has been mitigated on DLSS supported games.

It's mostly open world like Skyrim or RDR2, with the occasional CoD or Battlefield

For me personally, 27" is fine for 1080p or 1440p.  Pixels don't bother me.  I'm not as picky as I used to be about things like that.

27" at 1080p can be an issue for reading text for some, but I use 2x 27" 1080p at work and they're fine for me. I'd recommend seeing a similar monitor in person before buying, if you think it may be an issue possibly.

Realize the extra horsepower needed to move all those extra pixels. If you are okay with that in your high end (not sure exactly what that means) then all is well.

You think sticking with 24'' will be better? Haven't decided on the exact components yet, but I want to go kinda overkill now in order to make it last a bit longer than a mid tier build

You keep seeming to come back to asking the same question when after someone answers it with the information you need for you to make the decision on your own. No one here can tell you what to buy, that's on you. What we can do, and have done, is give you information about the various experiences.

If you want a 24" 1080p display because that's what fits/matches with your GPU budget then that's perfectly fine.

It's about even to buy 2x mid tier systems over so many years, or 1x high end one.  I mean, you may be paying for more fps than you can realistically use now just to have decent fps later.

IMO, buy what ya want and enjoy it.  Don't buy for the future.

I'd personally go with a 27 or 32 monitor, or a 35" Ultrawide 🙂 Then build the system to power it.

Start what you want to achieve, then build to it.  Don't just buy stuff cuz it's fast and powerful.  Have a goal.

I wanted that 35" UW for the immersive experience and large real estate (for working at home as well)  and then I bought a 8700k and 1080Ti to power it.
