Is 750w enough for a 3080?

Torsten
Go to solution Solved by Torsten,

Okay, again thanks for all the information and advice, I will be getting a reference 3080 and I already have the psu mentioned above, so I think I will be keeping it.

Hello, I was wondering if I will need to upgrade my current 750 watt power supply when I eventually get a 3080. Below is my current setup:

Yes, it is.

Nvidia recommend 750W when paired with a 125W TDP CPU. You could likely even get away with a good quality 650W PSU if strickly gaming and no over the top 100% stress tests. But 750W is ideal and more than enough.

For example, see this, where they paired a 3080 with a 10900k:

This system peaked at more or less 730W AC from the wall while stress testing it (and about 450W AC for gaming).
In this case, they use a 92% efficiency PSU. So they can safely pull about 815W AC from the wall to reach 750W DC. The power supply OUTPUTS 750W DC, but can consume a lot more from the wall in AC. That's just how electricity works. Converting AC to DC is not a 1:1 affair.
As such, you can also calculate how much DC power the PC used, 730W AC * 0.92 = 671W DC. Which is not far from the number they gave in the commentsimage.png.f0035702f3da2a296519d4f0cddde852.png

Okay, thanks for all the information!

a main rail of 60+ amp is prequired, closer to 70A is recommended on top of being a 750w psu. If you do run into problems, undervolting on ampere is very efficient, i wouldn't worry too much.

on paper it's a single rail 62A  gold, but i wouldn't pair it with a 3080, for a 5dollar diff

Id say yes upgrade it to at least a 1000w just to be safe and one that has a high efficiency rating like a gold or platinum

that is way overkill, I run a ryzen 9 3950x and a RTX 3090 on a EVGA 850w psu, a solid 850w would be the max that he would need.

You'd probably be ok with that corsair if you already have it. If you dont already have a psu or have power problems when you get your 3080 try to get one of the oem seasonic 850w that are on ebay for cheap.

I have multiple ones of this for my mining rigs and havent had problems with them.

yeah, but u know how it is, people get a new super computer and then run 7 "benchmark stress tests" + fumark for several hours, "just to be sure" : D

Well, anyways, imo quality and power spike handling is more important than wattage, and 750w should be fine indeed, if its a good unit.

btw, your video says founders edition… if OP gets one of those 450w EVGA turbo spike monsters ~750w might not cut it anymore. 🤔

I'm in agreement here as I believe in having more than enough rather than 'just enough' (IF you look at my sig, I not only say it, I practise it). A good Platinum/Gold tier 850W PSU is enough though, and is the minimum I'd recommend for long term usage.
