The issue is more that there are other metal or material choices that are less environmentally harmful. Titanium isn't actually a wonder material and you'd never have noticed if Apple switched to it if they hadn't said so.

 

It just doesn't make sense to call out environmentalism at all, I doubt Apple is looking at using it for this line of reasoning at all.

Moving from say Stainless Steel to Titanium is the opposite of this though. Much like how it was when we started banning single use plastic bags for shopping but then had to start wrapping many things in plastic to protect them from the abrasive paper bags.

I think the aerospace and aeronautical industries have been pushing this kind of research and development just fine. I really do not see Apple contributing much here at all. Also there are already laptops and other hand held devices that use Titanium already so Apple has very little new ground to break here as well.

 

This entire story in every facet is just a giant meh honestly.

What are my pockets made of? Pocket material, of course. If glass gets scratched in pockets and you have no idea how and from what and you wonder what scratches and wears out 300x softer materials like plastic? Also every wood is harder than plastic. Just placing phones on surfaces back down scratches them with ease. God forbid you slide it on table... Am I only one on this planet who owned a plastic smartphone like a decade ago!?!?!?

 

And once again, I don't understand the "use case" argument everyone throws around all the time. If I want to have a naked phone with glass back, you need a phone with glass back. Obviously. If you don't want it or you're clumsy like hell, you can always put a plastic case on it. If I want glass, I can't just put a glass case on a phone. That's my argument. I know Linus likes to use phone in naked form. And I like to have a choice. I might use case now, but I can pull it off and use it in its "nude" form. If it's already plastic, you only have option betwen plastic and plastic. That's not really much of an option... That's why I'm so anal about it. If people are so damn clumsy, then buy a CAT phone that's made for abuse. Or demand polycarbonate material without fancy rainbow colors. So it's the same color if it's all scratched and dented, not have fancy rainbow mirror paint on top and plain white plastic underneath...

 

And with this, why anyone bothers with aluminium even? Stainless steel and titanium when people want plastics so much? We had plastic phones that didn't bend or break in half. Then everyone wanted glass and suddenly no one wants it?! UGH!?

I don't actually care about how my phone feels(I put it in a rugged case anyway), but the main benefit I see with a polycarbonate phone is that it has a noticeably better connection. I had an iphone 4 and my lumia 625 would consistently outperform it on 3G. It can be because of modem evolution, but I still think that a plastic box would have better reception than a metal box due to basic physics

 

I don't care whatever thing my phone is made up of.

People are so angry I'm hyped for a titanium phone though. I loved when they introduced stainless with the X. It's one of the reasons I opted for the white phone and phone itself. So a squared titanium design will probably feel amazing in the hand and be incredibly scratch resistant.

+1. That move was so seriously weird and wrong.

iPhone 4 had issues because they used side rails for antennas and they cocked up the arrangement and you basically shorted antennas with your hand while holding it.

 

Also, the thing is, solid color polycarbonate is generally excellent choice because no matter how much you scratch it or dent it, it's still same color underneath. If phone was solid red polycarbonate, scratching it meant the groove had same color inside. Drop on concrete? The dent had same color inside. And as a result, it just wasn't visible. No phone uses solid color these days. They all use base plastic and then they smear fancy rainbow mirror coating over it. Scratch or dent that and plastic underneath will be exposed, looking 100 times worse. I think Lumia phones used such solid colored plastics and some Nokia's before Microsoft and HMD.

 

And in the end, it's just wrong to have plastic back on such expensive device. It just makes no sense other than for Samsung who just made a massive cost cutting that has seen zero resistance from consumers. The durability argument would fly if phone model was "Galaxy S21 Xcover". But it wasn't. It was a regular consumer model for the masses.

 

I don't know, it's just funny reading how people attack Apple for considering titanium as material for their phones meanwhile people embrace and defend Samsung putting cheapo plastics on their flagship. Bizarre.
