Undervolting VS PPT?

Looks like im at the "undervolting" limit … -0.125 offset gives good results, -0.250 seems slightly worse, certainly not better, i also set PBO Advanced to +150mhz (offset) which really doesnt seem to do much either…

Thing is im running very close to the 88w "limit" and also "PPT"…

So im wondering if i can maybe overwrite that as theres a setting in bios for it…

Temps are fine ~71C at 100% all cores and like 4.1ghz

Of course i gotta test maybe +200mhz PBO offset  still, but I doubt that'll do much - as its getting real close to max wattage and PPT already…

So I set PBO limits from auto to motherboard, the % are much lower now, performance didnt change much or at all though…?? There goes my theory of having more PPT headroom… doesnt do anything by itself apparently …

c23_voltageoffset-PPT-MOBO.thumb.png.c80f16792aa0f78f7b46d514d1ac50a6.png

Idk if setting a higher wattage limit is a good idea? Looks like i have still thermal headroom though.

I also dont understand why the clock offset of +150 seemingly doesnt do much, the CPU just doesnt seem to want to boost to 4.2Ghz anymore after i updated the BIOS.

Kinda odd?

With my 5600X I use 200 PPT 140 EDC 180 EDC, with my 5900X I use 200 PPT 130 TDC 130 EDC +200 -30 on both.

If it were me, I would run something a little more strenuous than cinibench, find out the max the CPU will pull on its own. Write those values down, and enter them into PBO advanced and from there you can do some tuning. I like Linpack Xtreme. Set to 8gb and hit go. Hopefully your cooler can take it. Your clocks will drop pretty hard, but that's ok, you just want to know the max it can pull on its own.

Yeah, i thought of using something that uses maybe a bit more power too, i tried p95, that used even less lol.

Well, I think temps maybe play more of a role than i thought, today its 3C hotter in my room and the cpu runs ~1C hotter than yesterday with the exact same settings, so 72C max, and the frequencies are actually a bit lower… 3.95 instead of 4.1 @ 100% load. But seems a bit much for just ~1C difference?

And ok thanks, ill try that, but what do you mean with "+200 -30 on both" though?

If using p95 set to small fft 128k 👍

Curve Optimizer in PBO Advanced. I don't play with voltage unless I am running 1 clock 1 voltage. No need to..

Ah, ok, well Ryzen 3000 dont have that, we have to do it the old fashioned way of blood, sweat, tears and ice if nothing else helps! 🤣

In that case, I am ok with about 1.325v all core all load voltage 😄

Alright, no problem , that was still some valuable information perhaps, i can imagine setting these pbo limits manually would also work on Ryzen 3000 … although i still dont know what to do with the wattage, and some other stuff, there are just too many settings! :x

I might try that, although my plan was more like change PBO etc so it still does the boosting automatically, but seems i hit a roadblock as really the only thing that slightly improves performance is a negative voltage offset (which again just lowers temps slightly, why it performs better i guess)

Fwiw, i tried setting  the multiplier to 42 with auto voltage and the pc didnt even boot into windows, so maybe i really have to set a lower voltage manually.  🤔

My first AM4 CPU was a 3600XT because it was on sale and Zen 3 was no where to be found. it was ok.. I didn't play with PBO much. I just ran an all core clock of either 4400 1.26875v, or 4500 1.3375v. I only ran it for maybe a month or two.. 1.3375 was on the higher side for all core ALL loads. Probably a bit dangerous for p95 at that higher voltage.

well, i tried 4.1ghz again with 1.35v and yet it didnt boot again? I cant even tell if thats too much or too little voltage as it uses ~1.44v on auto at ~4.1?

That said i just read a tutorial "from msi" and they say to set LLC to "3 or 4" so i guess Id have to try that… 👀

Yeah those Zen 2's are all over the map on their capabilities.. some are really good and some not so much.. you would have to play with it.

Thing is i remember i had a similar "issue" with a 2200g… it did not boot / work at all until i set LLC to 1 or 2 (iirc) then i managed a "all core" boost to whooping 3.9ghz, which all things considered is what you can expect… i also overclocked the igpu, i think around +300mhz, so kinda ok too, point is it all worked, once i figured it out … i think i even used the same or similar tutorial 😅

WELL , sometimes Im not so sure about this BIOS/motherboard tho…

Congratulations for the unsuccessful save with our utterly useless fake-save feature !!!

LOL. So i think i "maybe" should take the slight undervolt boost and be happy 😄 🤷‍♂️
