Do power supplies really matter that much?

If it's from a reputable company, its rated 80+ gold, and enough headroom for the parts, does the psu really matter past that?

I'm asking because I'm debating between these two:

EVGA SuperNOVA 120-GP-0650-X1, 650 G+: $59.99

Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 650W: $65.99

Yes. Because even reputable brands make(rebrand) craptastic PSUs and 80+ gold doesn't tell the whole story.

Case in point, we have a PSU tier list just for that. While it doesn't have every PSUs ever, it still better than blindly buying any random PSU just because of branding.

 

 

Not sure about the EVGA one, but the Thermaltake is gold A tier. Meaning it's one of the best you could get.

Some of them are having issues with the 3000 series gpus

If you get a 3070rtx or higher I suggest finding one on the top of tiers on the forum sticky

For what you have posted so far in your part list yeah, but depending if you get a gpu you may want more than 650w

I suppose 650w should be enough. 

I'd also look at the corsair RMX (2018) psu's and compare prices, I just trust corsair more personally.

650W is the bare minimum when paired with a relative low powered CPU like a 3600. If you're getting something beefier, you should go higher. Personally, I'd go 750W, just to be safe, and have a little headroom for upgrades later.

rtx 3070 uses around 250w of power and r5 3600 under 100 so together if 100% stressed (not realistic) they will use around 350w.

 

add fans, storage, ram and motherboard to mix and your system will consume liuttle over 400w at full load. it will be lower when gaming.

 

@Mark Kainedid run rtx 3070 and r5 3600 with not the best 500w psu just fine. 

 

 

so you want atlerast a good 500w psu.

Motherboard tier list. Tier A for overclocking 5950x. Tier B for overclocking 5900x, Tier C for overclocking 5800X. Tier D for overclocking 5600X. Tier F for 4/6 core Cpus at stock. Tier E avoid.

I am curious since 3060 ti is supposed to have similar power spikes, but some models only come with 1 x 8pin, 150+75w , can it still spike over 225w?

Yup.  But the power delivery via cable isn't impacted since the power spikes are so fast.
