Do I need a thermal sensor for my 2017 iMac if I upgrade to an SSD?

I'm going to upgrade my 21.5" mid 2017 imac (model a1418) to an ssd, and I keep seeing people on forums saying a thermal sensor is needed for an SSD upgrade. is this true? do i really need it? If so, how/where do I get it and how do I install it? I'm planning to use a 250gb crucial mx500

AFAIK the 2017 model does not need a thermal sensor. That mainly applies to older models, such as the 2009-2011 models. 

However, I wouldn't recommend opening the iMac if you've never done it before. Using a USB 3 or Thunderbolt 3 SSD would be much easier.

I don't see anything about a thermal sensor but I would be very weary about opening the glass front without lots of research into proper tools and techniques.

See if iFixit has a repair guide. That might give you a better idea. Also be careful. As I remember LMG opened one of those and it ended up costing thousands to fix.

That was the iMac Pro, not the base model iMac.

They have similar build Im sure. Apple doesnt make repairs easy on any machine really.

They do, but it's not as expensive to replace components on the regular iMac.
