Free Video Editors for Beginners?

Hi, 

I've been looking for a user-friendly video editor. I cannot find a video editor that is easy to use, nor good tutorials on how to use them. The ones I've tried are as follows:

Adobe Premier
Cyberlink Powerdirector

Final Cut Pro X
Blender

Shotcut

Lightworks

DaVinci Resolve

 

I have spent over 500 dollars on editing software (which was a dumb idea, to be honest) and I am not willing to spend any more. Every time I hear of a different editor people say it's "intuitive" and "for beginners" but I just can't seem to figure them out. they seem overwhelming, and I can't even add moving text to my videos. If anyone can point me in the direction of a simple editor or good tutorial for the software I have it would be very much appreciated.

Ive used most of those, and there pretty easy to use, its just there is a learning curve. 

 

Id just pick one and stick with it(im currently a fan of resolve). Just google how to do things as they come up.

Shotcut is seriously easy for beginners.

I can't edit in other programs like Sony Vegas but in Shotcut i can do everything easier.

Personally i would think of staying with Shotcut will be a good decision.

There are many tutorials on YouTube with all options in this software.

 

 

 

I'm here to help you out with some basic tasks, I'm still learning some things, so don't belive I can solve everything 😉

I mean you can't expect a non linear video editor to be block buttons and drag and drop functionality. They all come with a learning curve and within 6 hours you should be able to edit videos in any of them. You'll encounter more advanced techniques but a simple youtube video will teach you everything you need to know

I honestly find it kinda incredible that you haven't found decent tutorials for any of those applications. I mean even just your example of animating text seems so simple that I can't believe that you haven't found tutorials that teach something like that for Premiere or Resolve. Sure, it's not like there are tons of presets in those programs that just let you apply a basic effect with a single click that does all the animating for you. Stuff like Premiere or Resolve is professional grade software, so it won't give you any restrictive presets, instead giving you a suite of tools that force you to do everything yourself to get the desired outcome. But simple editing, adding text and doing a few transitions is hardly complex even in industry standard software. At this point you should honestly stick to something like Resolve if you're not willing to pay the Adobe tax. It's free and from what I can tell has a large number of video tutorials from users and also robust training documentation from Blackmagic Design. But at the end of the day, video editing is a skill that you have to learn and that takes time.

Most of those on your list are software I wouldn't recommend for first time editors. For example Blender is so different, you need to really get into it to get things done.

 

For absolute beginners, Windows Photos and Videos. This is how most have started editing. If you want bit more flexibility, Hitfilm Express and OpenShot. Or on Android, InShot. On Mac it would be iMovie if that's still a thing.

 

The level above those are Resolve and ShotCut. Or the paid alternatives, Premiere, Vegas and Final Cut X.

 

Buying one software is fine, spending $500 on something you don't know how to use is something else. I have paid for (bad) software after then Windows Movie Maker wasn't enough for my needs. But back then (2014) there weren't really options.

Every time I hear of a different editor people say it's "intuitive" and "for beginners" but I just can't seem to figure them out. they seem overwhelming, and I can't even add moving text to my videos. If anyone can point me in the direction of a simple editor or good tutorial for the software I have it would be very much appreciated.

Shotcut because it is free and open source meaning no spookyness and it does not make massive video files like final cut which take up like GBs of storage

My Laptop: A MacBook Air 

My Desktop: Don’t have one 

My Phone: An Honor 8s (although I don’t recommend it)

Not sure about Movavi. For me it's quite simplistic, but I have only worked with older versions of this software. Not sure is they still allow to use all the features in their free version, but last time I checked - they had online editor.

 

I think shotcut is better because there is less chance shotcut will just be abandonded because even if the project no longer develops it, the community will probably maintain it and also shotcut won't push you to pay for anything. At anytime DaVinci Resolve could decide to make you pay for it

Since you have a Mac, iMovie.  It's free and easy to use and geared for beginners rather than pros like Final Cut Pro.

iMovie is a good start for a beginner, but I would still go for resolve, it's free and believe it or not knowing how to use an editing software is the easiest part of learning how to edit videos.

If you want to be serious about video editing (making youtube videos or something) I would go for a software that you will not have to replace after, if it's just to edit your vacations videos, iMovie will do the trick just fine

It may be the case that the reason why you feel that none of the tools you use are beginner friendly, or that you are able to learn how to use them, is because you are trying to do too much too quickly. Any tool can be overwhelming when you are expecting yourself to become a wizard within the first few weeks of using it.

 

I suggest just sticking to one tool, and then just focus on learning to do one thing at a time. Da Vinci Resolve is my go-to tool, and it is not that hard to use when you really break it down into one thing at a time. It's also free and relatively popular, so you know that you will eventually find tutorials for things if you need. [Sidenote: Tutorials are usually for incredibly small steps or things; the more specific and minor the thing you are looking for, the more likely you will find your tutorial].

 

Also, don't sweat that your initial batch of videos will "look bad". You're starting out, it's very normal that your videos will not meet the standards of good videos that you've seen. Adopt a mindset of consistently creating videos and being intentional with each project, and you will see that the quality of your work will improve over time.
