We have heard a lot about 64-bit chips on Android recently, but not much from the software side. PocketNow reported, Intel has made a build of Android 4.4 kitKat, which included a 64-bit kernel, optimized for its Atom chips.

64-bit processors are slowly making their way to smartphones. Apple’s got a head start, and Android’s likely to start following sometime this year. We’ve already seen a lot of ground work laid for 64-bit on Android, and even heard about efforts towards 64-bit chips. But for that hardware to do its job, it needs 64-bit-aware software inplace. Android’s Linux roots give it a head start at preparing for 64-bit hardware, but someone still needs to implement all that Linux 64-bit stuff over on the Android codebase. We’re still waiting for such support from Google and the AOSP, but today we hear about a separate effort from Intel, which has released a build of KitKat containing a 64-bit kernel optimized for its Atom SoCs.

While the kernel is a key part to preparingthe platform totake full advantage of64-bit chips, it’s still not the complete story – we need to see a lot of additional Android code updated for 64-bit before we start talking about the platform as a whole being ready for these new chips.

That said, Intel clearly has its eyes on the future here, and mainstream Android 64-bit support continues to look less like a matter of “if,” and more one of “when.”

I wonder can X86-64 make ARM obsolete in mobile.

32/64 bit are completely different things than x64/86

Yeah, they are but aren't they the same in this case? If Intel isn't using x86-64 then what are they using?

What good Android would be on the desktop by itself? The only useful idea was dual booting with Windows 8 but that idea got shot down by both Google and Microsoft.

A more mouse friendly interface/cfw should be very easy to make (Some variant of windowed apps would be awesome). Indeed you'll counter weird screen orientation and lots of "that would be so easy on a touchscreen" in most of play store apps. If I'm not a gamer (or I'm gaming rarely), and all I need is a good video player, a browser and turrent, why wouldn't I install Kitkat on my SSD and not use a trial Windows anymore?

they made a 64 bit kernel that runs on x86-64 for their processors this, does not mean it will run on arm chips

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

i use to have the second best link in the world here, but it died ;_; its a 404 now but it will always be here

Yeah. That's why I wondered would Intel be able to win against ARM on mobile with x86-64.

Not much point. Google are better off releasing a set of desktop applications for Linux, OSX and Windows to provide seamless integration with Android through Google drive.
