Corsair 5000d airflow vs 7000d airflow

Maxie94

Hello. I'm planning on upgrading my case to one of these but I can't really decide. I'd go for the 5000d airflow hands down if I knew for sure 2 hdds will fit along with a RM850i PSU (180 mm long), if it won't fit, then I'd go for the bigger (and heavier) 7000d airflow.

Has someone already tried (and succeeded) this?

The 5000D is already a full-sized ATX case. The 7000D is just even bigger. You can fit all that in a 4000D, actually, so 5000D would be plenty large enough.

I did consider the 4000d in the past, but I prefer the 5000d since it is a little bit bigger and I need at least 2 usb 3.0 ports. And as I said, I'm only considering de 7000d because I'm certain that my hdds are gonna fit along with my PSU.

That's fine. The point was that even the 4000D meets your needs for drives and PSU, so you're definitely fine going with a 5000D.

personally i would go for the 7000D because being even bigger means that it will be able to support computer components like GPUs getting bigger over time so it will save you money in the long run.

Something else to consider is the 7000d has an overall better fan and rad mounting solution than the 4000d and 5000d. For all the thought put into these cases, the fan mount... panels in the 4000d and 5000d are poorly designed pieces of sheet metal optimized for 120mm fans. Hopefully the fan rack design of the 7000d is integrated into future revisions of the 4000d and 5000d. No bottom-mount case fan options for any of them is also a bit of a downer, IMO.

I just checked their manuales on the corsair site, and I think the maximum size for the GPU is wrong, because it says that the 5000d only supports a GPU of up to 370 mm and the 7000d supports a GPU of up to 330 mm, I'm sure those measures are mistaken.

Aside this detail, I think you're right about the future proofing. The only thing that bothers me about the 7000d is that only the case is already too heavy for one person to move. How do I move it going up on stairs is the next big question for me

yes corsair doesnt like to post the correct info for whatever reason but i dont know what you are looking at because the tech specs i am seeing for the 7000D says 450mm GPU not 330mm and the 5000D says 400mm not 370mm

These are the specs I'm looking at, I got em from the corsair official site, and the GPU max length for the 5000d is 420 mm according to PcPartPicker.

I have a RMX850w in my 5000D

Im pretty sure the hdd cage still fits there, might be a tight squeeze for the cables though, you might need to take the hdd cage out to do psu cable management (to get the gpu cables behind the hdd cage and up where the gpu is)

The 7000D is just ridiculously huge, i'd never consider it.

5000D also has 3 dedicated ssd holders on the back panel under the motherboard, I don't think you can put HDD's on those though.

Edit: My 3080 FTW3 has plenty of room, this case has a huge open air pocket beyond the gpu, you could almost fit 2 3080's in a line (more like one and a half)

those specs are probably correct if you were to include a 60mm thick radiator with 25mm fans on both sides in a push pull configuration making the total watercooling or AIO around 110mm thick. that minus the 520mm from front to back makes the total length around 410mm of GPU length it can have. this is just my guess though at their process of saying what the case can support. but in reality it can have a GPU that is about as long as it is from front to back.

The thing is that your PSU is shorter than mine, about 20 mm of difference, and that tight squeeze is what I'm worried about, I don't know if that's gonna cause some trouble later on.

You may be right, but the GPU max length is the least of my concerns right now, because I know for sure both cases are big enough for the GPU I wanna get, that is the EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra (someday hopefully)

well sorry. i took this from being about the PSU to a GPU which is another matter completely. i would still go with the 7000D because of it being the bigger case which will allow for bigger components like i said for upgrading later.

according to corsair the 5000D can handle 4 SSDs and 2 HDDs. the 7000D can handle 4 SSDs and 6 HDDs. of course you can make all HDDs storage SSD storage with a simple bracket insert.

Just as I thought, that 20 mm difference makes a difference between tight and super tight. I think it'll be best for me to go for the 7000d. It may be ridiculously big, but at least I'm certain that I won't have space problems.

Question: do you keep your case closed, or you leave it like that?

I keep it closed, no reason to keep it open, it already intakes as much air as it can use since i have 6 120mm noctua a12x25 fans on the front.

The dust filters are great too

Nice configuration. Can I ask you a favor? Could you try to put the hdd cage in and send me a picture to see how "well" it fits? It would help me a lot.

Besides ripping all my wires out I don't think it would fit, its a pretty beefy chunk of metal.

If your PSU is larger than mine I don't think itll work.

I think mine ((might)) work, if I unwired most of everything and violently shoved all the wires down the tiny 3 inches of space in between the sides off the cage

oh boy idk, I can carry it but its a little heavy because its awkward to carry, id guesstimate somewhere around 40 pounds, maybe slightly more.

7000D will be really heavy, in fact its 12 pounds more than the 5000D is, 7000D is 43.6lb before adding anything apparently.

At least you're not talking about a Corsair Obsidian 900D...this thing is ridiculously heavy and a major PITA to move around on the desk when loaded up like how I have it. They are almost identical in weight but dimensions are slightly different (smaller side), so the 7000D shouldn't be too cumbersome to move around.
