3080 ti more toasty than the 3080?

Jclau77

Hey guys, I recently just got my hands on the brand new spanking RTX 3080 ti and I will say it's a monstrous card. But, I did notice that is MORE toasty than the 3080. The ti that I currently have is the FTW3. I do understand that the ti is supposed to be a bit hotter than the regular 3080 due to it drawing more power into the card but it still concerns me a bit. With that being said, I will mention that I do have a 9 fan setup in my o11 dynamic case. They are all 120s and the cooling setup that I currently have is six intake and three exhaust with a top mount AIO.

While conducting my torture test during fully under load I have noticed that it is around 5-8 degrees hotter than my 3080. Here are the differences:

Idle:

38-43 (3080)

45-48 (3080 ti)

Under load

70-75 (3080)

75-83 (3080 ti)

The concerning number of this test was that it reached the 83 degree temperature limit which got me wondering. Is this normal? Do I have anything to worry about? If not then I'll leave it as it is but if yes I'll consider looking into the thermal pads and see if they need to be replaced. Highly unlikely but I want to hear what you guys think.

83C is fine, but if it makes you uncomfortable you could alter the fancurve a bit to ramp up sooner, thus keeping the card cooler. albeit a bit noisier too.

Thanks for the info! I was just concerned about thermal throttling because when I used to have my DeepCool Mattrexx 55rf case it caused a LOT of thermal throttling but since I swapped to the o11 dynamic, thermals have been improved drastically. Plus it looks cooler too! But other than that, I guess that everything is fine right?

well 83C is the lower limit for thermal throttling, but just a few numbers are not a good indication of temperature loads over time. that 83C number is likely just a peak scenario, and under sustained load the card should keep a little cooler.

No shit, it's a bigger card. Ti is always hotter, just saying. Why would you need a 3080 and 3080 ti? Mining?

I'm selling my 3080 to a friend of mine who recently got a 3060. I offered it to him for slightly above MSRP so in turn I'm only losing only a few hundred dollars. He's paying 1.5k for the card.

Sounds like you paid to much for the cards 😉 Original MSRP for 3080 was 799

*$699

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Yeah kinda funny you can't buy one under $2000 when the intended market price is $699 😄

If you are worried about the temperature limit raise it.

With Precision X1 move the power slider to the right and the temp limit should go up to about 91c.

The down side to running at 83c is that you are dropping clock speed.

With my XC Ultra 3080 ti at stock it is:

79c 1815mhz

76c  1905mhz

73c  1920mhz

It will not hit 84c stock.

Bed time stories.

When I first got a EVGA RTX 2080 ti XC back in 2018. It ran at 83c under load. In tests I noticed that the hot air expelled by the GPU was not exhausting out of the case. To fix it I added another intake fan and that got the air to circulate under load and dropped the temps 4c. Later I moved the computer from my bedroom, to my living room and gained 3c.

My RTX 3080 ti is paired with a 5800x in a Cooler Master H500p case. The cooling system works fine gaming but in benching the air gets trapped in the bottom of the case and the GPU heats up. Removing the glass side panel fixes it but is not convenient.

This is in Canadian dollars by the way. I got the card off Canada Computers for 1.3 and the 3080 ti came with a 11900k for around 2.5k
