New PC or Upgrade?

mr welsh

Budget (including currency): around £1000

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:  GTA 5, Counterstrike, Arma 3, Hell let loose, Squad...........  being able to play latest games and not on Min graphics

Other details Interl R core I5 4690 @ 3.50 (4 CPU)     8 Gig RAM = x2 4gig stick (Not sure what brand)   Geforce GTX960 6GB

Hi guys, Ive had this computer about 6-7 years now and tolerated low graphics, and accepted I cannot run the latest games (COD Warzone for example)  I was wondering if its better to get a NEW pc or upgrade some things

I dont really have much money to put into it , and looking at the Geforce 1080 years later the prices are still high enough to buy a car with 😛

Im not sure where the best places to buy parts or prebuilt computers are as Ive always been lazy and gone into main dealers that are obviously over priced.

any advice would be appriciated

Get a new PC at this point.

You won't get enough upgrade from that platform to matter.

Get a ryzen 1600 / 2600 + B450 + 16gb DDR4 + SSD.

Hold on the rest of the money, that GPU is still ok.

Wait till gpu prices drop, and get 3060.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

Why get a 2 or 3 generation old CPU still?  That seems silly.

Because they are cheap, new cpu are overpriced right now.

maybe the high end chips?  But you can build a modern CPU just fine today.

GPUs are insane, tho.

It may be bad enough that you will want to change out everything EXCEPT the video card depending on what it is. If the video card is slower than an apu/iGPU one of those might be something worth looking at.  Higher end integrated graphic are showing ability to play new games at 1080p low.  CPUs and motherboards are both fairly normally priced right now but discrete video cards are still crazy.  The historically standard path for this type of thing that proved true for lumber (another product there was recently a shortage of) is that there is one particular section of the supply chain that is making most of the money from the shortage.  This section will attempt to extend the shortage as long as possible because they like money.  There is a limit to this though.  Stocks will grow and warehouses will fill up. Eventually they won’t be able to slow the flow of stock anymore because they run out of warehouse space and prices will drop.  We are seeing now that video cards are remaining i. Stock but prices remain high implying this refilling is starting to take place.  Depending on warehouse size the dam will sooner or later break.  It hasn’t happened yet though.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
