HDR in Resident Evil 8 looks fantastic

*Note: Must have an HDR monitor to actually see the difference.*

🧐  You know, I feel like Capcom isn't getting nearly the credit they truly deserve for their HDR implementation in Resident Evil 8, because compared to 99% of other games, they nailed it, did an excellent job. Normally, HDR in my experience usually makes the image look washed out in other games like Hitman 3 and Sekiro. It just looks like someone slapped a faded out white screen over it and called it a day. In Resident Evil 8 though, its the exact opposite. The game looks great either way, but it looks washed out without HDR. With HDR enabled, the game looks drastically different. When a scene is supposed to be bright or have light to it, it truly does as you expect it to. When a scene is supposed to be dark, it looks DARK. They need to discuss their approach to the art direction for this game at the Game Developers Conference, because whatever they did actually allowed HDR to do its job correctly for once. This is the first game where I can honestly say I'd much rather play with HDR enabled.  Ain't nobody gonna tell me that HDR is not the future after playing this game. Its every bit the future as Ray Tracing or anything else. 🙂 👍👍

Hdr is great, but usually it's good in most games, as long as windows does it right.

Windows hdr implementation is worse than hot ceral with chocolate milk.

Sometimes it will be fine. Other times, it turns everything green. Or doesn't let you choose a 16:9 resolution.

Though GG for getting g it to work.

I could use some help with this!

🙂 Yeah, I don't know if it has to do with Windows. I only tried it in Hitman 3 and Sekiro, so I can't really say if its good in most games. In those two games it looks atrocious. Resident Evils isn't perfect either, but it looks superb compared to most games, as close to perfect as I've seen it so far.

Yeah, thats one thing that will hopefully be fixed in windows 11. Hdr can make shit look great, but only if windows will work right.

Also, I can see the difference without a hdr monitor, here's a screenshot from my phone:

Yeah, I can see it on my phone. Tremendous difference between the two. It brings the scenes to life like I've never seen it do before. Hopefully Microsoft gets their act together with Win 11's HDR implementation. I'm sure they've gotten plenty of complaints about it. 😆

if its like the other REs then yes maybe impressive for a couple of minutes otherwise i found the candy poop colors rather distracting in my nitty gritty horror action game…

Also its not getting recorded, recordings where HDR is on are completely washed out rendering them nearly useless… havent found a way not even youtube HDR streaming.

Give HDR as a whole a 4/10 therefore currently.

The game looked amazing in SDR already, but judging by the screenshots they did a great job on HDR. Sadly my TV is too far away to use for gaming, but I'd love to play it again in HDR.

It must not be recording HDR then, but converting/recording to SDR. Is 4/10 not a bit harsh just because you can't record it? 😛

No, if i could record it that would make it a 5/10, i also dont really like the oversaturated colors, and the games I tried it (RE2, RE3, and something else idr) it was just too bright, like a tad bit unrealistic being at night mostly but its really really bright as day anyway. 🤔

Like it can look good, but overall its just too much imo and the wow factor wore off quickly.

The 32 inch one was about 2 times the price of the 27 inch one, so i got the smaller one.

Hoping it still has it, but it should i guess.

Now the 32 inch one is barely 150£ more than the 27 inch -_-

Plenty of games support it. Its just a matter of whether or not it was done right. Resident Evil 8 did a great job with it. Hitman and Sekiro, not so much. Not sure about Forza Horizon 4.

🙂 See, this is why more attention to detail needs to be put into HDR, because of scenes like this. When a scene is supposed to be dark, it looks dark, no bull shit artificial looking lighting.

Calling SDR "bullshit artificial looking lighting" is a bit much in my opinion. Also for HDR to become popular we'll need to get affordable proper mainstream HDR capable displays and not crappy edge-lit, or 5-zone dimming things.

🙂 Nope, bottom one is HDR on. Looks more accurate, when you think of what is actually lighting the scene. The room shouldn't be that bright in the first picture with nothing but a few little candles. Its the same problem in the basement area of the castle, or dungeon, WAY too light. It should be pitch black down there with not a single light source besides a few small candles, and that's exactly how HDR makes it look. 👍👍.....The difference with HDR on is rather astounding. Whatever Capcom did needs to be reproduced at the Game Developers conference, by far the best HDR implementation.
