Any good USB C 3.2 gen 2 dock recommendations?

s18067

Hey guys. I recently bought a Zephyrus G15 because, in this crazy world, a high end laptop has somehow become more affordable than a high end desktop 馃槺馃槺 My brain now hurts from all the cables and accessories I need to buy to set my rig up properly... 馃槶

Anyway, getting to the point, can anyone suggest a good USB C 3.2 gen 2 hub? I use a lot of USB peripherals (2 for my keyboard, my mouse, USB headphone, external hard drives, maybe a capture card in the future), so I'm looking for something with a decent combination of USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports (or all 3.0), and I prefer a solid dock over a small dongle for cable management purposes.聽

I'm thinking of maybe聽this one聽from Plugable, but it's kinda expensive and I don't really need the TB3 for now since the G15 doesn't have a TB3 port because AMD.聽

I've also had a look at some of the cheaper options, but many of them have horrible reviews, and it's nigh impossible for me to get a refund because I live in South Africa and returning a bad product would be a giant hassle.聽

Any kind soul to help me out? What do you guys use? Suggestions will be much appreciated.聽

Thanks.聽

Hey,

If you just need (more) USB port

a usb HUB like this probably is all you need聽

Because generally usb Dock have more than just usb like, display out whether be a simple vga or hdmi, ethernet, card reader and other stuff baked in to it

Something like mouse, keyboard, usb headphones is not required something more than usb 2.0 and for capture card you'd better be having a port dedicated to it to avoid bandwidth issue and any sort of weirdness when using it

I have an anker 7-in-1 usb 3.0 hub. Gives me issues when I plug my mouse, keyboard, and headphone in at once. Doesn't like it. So want to try a proper dock.聽

And really appreciate your numerous messages man 馃檪

I have a hub, but it doesn't like it when I plug all my peripherals in, so I'm looking for a 3.1 gen 2 dock. Doesn't have to be too fancy. The example just happens to also have TB3 support.聽

That's probably because it needs a power, powered usb Dock should technically fix the problems

What is the issue anyway?

What do you need? You only have usb C so anything with display will NOT work. Unless you get a dock that also supports displayport passthrough as you have a usb c usb + dp port combo port. However those hubs basically do not exist.

It seems like TB3/USB 3.1 G2 combo docks are the only ones that suit my needs, as many of them also have DP ports... I was hoping for something less pricey, but I can't seem to find any cheap ones from reputable companies. Oh well..聽

You CAN NOT USE THUNDERBOLT DOCKS. You do not have thunderbolt thus these docks will NOT work.

I am fully aware of that, but some thunderbolt docks are compatible with usb c 3.2 gen 2 + alt dp + PD, albeit with a bandwidth limitation, like the plugable one I linked in the OP or the Anker powerexpand.聽

I've decided to give聽this one聽a shot. Reviews seem overall positive, doesn't break the bank, and that should be enough ports for me, if I include the ports on the monitor I'll be getting. Thanks everyone for the advice.
