so i F***ed up

IvIast3r

so i was packing my computer for shipping, and upon removal of my hdd it was snug so i pushed and pulled and it launched onto the floor, fell about 2.7 feet onto tile

things i have tried, hooking it back to computer and with external reader

it showed the files the first time and so i tried to check them and it crashed

so i tried again and windows wouldn't load, so i removed the hdd and tried with ssd and windows loaded, plugged in the hdd and says i needed to format

so back to square one i went and tried with both hdd plugged in and started up and windows is now performing a disk check on the hardrive

the disk check said windows could not recover... i missed the rest

so the final question is, did i break my 2tb HDD, from the looks im going to say yes, but is there anything you guys think i should try

You might be able to take it to someone to have the files moved off of it is possible. But it sounds like it scratched the disk and is pretty much dead/broken

I'm guessing you could have chipped the super magnets inside the HDD from the drop...

Short of sending it off for data recovery there's nothing you can do. There are a few home remedies for HDD issues but it sounds to me like you're way past those.

Fractal core 1000 - Asus A88xm plus - Athlon 760k @4.3 GHz - MSI 270 oc - 4GB corsair vengeance low profile - WD green 1TB - 128GB Corsair Neutron - Corsair CS750

see what happens if you format the drive, it's gone anyway so worth a try, it fixed an old laptop drive of mine back in 2005 and it's still running today. (though the single core pentium laptop is showing its age)

Put it int he freezer for a bit, and try it then. you might get some files off of it.

Sorry to say, but you royally fucked it.

Wait, is this a actual thing?

My friend's Seagate HDD was making helicopter noises, he called me while he was sitting in the kitchen with his laptop and wires running into the freezer. It worked, according to him.

Wait, is this a actual thing?

It is, you need to wrap it in multiple layers of tissue and zip locks as air tight as possible. As soon as it's out of the freezer you pop it in and extract as much as you can from it until it eventually fails again. Then repeat the process until it completely dies.

99% chance of this not working in this case because this is due to dropping and physical damage rather than being worn out.

Error: 410

its not dead and the freezer will just condensate moisture on the inside, i have currently recovered 313,420 files and counting. for some reason the drop made the drive read as a raw drive...odd but i am still going to replace after i recover and upgrade to windows 8

Just write it off as something you're not going to do again if i was you now :)

Is your data okay though?

Compatible with Windows 95

Stop suggesting the freezer method. Please, just stop. The freezer method with FUBAR the drive and will not allow you to recover any data as the entire drive with be scratched to hell. Please stop suggesting it. It does not work!
