Can you use a 4K TV with Onkyo HT-S3500 5.1-Channel receiver?

I’m getting back into home theater setups and considering buying a 4K tv. The only rub is that my receiver is a Onkyo HT-S3500 5.1-Channel. I can’t tell if it support 4K TVs or not, I don’t think it does. But trying to confirm. 
 

With that being said, does anyone have a direct recommendations for a more modern receiver that is comparable to my existing Onkyo?

Nope, only 1080p passthru (HD).  You'll need to upgrade either the receiver or use a set-top box with an audio out.  Or use the TV audio out like Paddy states.

 

I had this issue, so I bought a Roku Ultra to feed 4k to my TV and optical audio to my Denon instead of buying a new AVR.

Well, you can use the TVs optical out, to connect it to the receiver. It's how I use my 5.1 set up and it works very well.

What other hardware do you have in the setup? We primarily use an AppleTV(4k) and PS4. Would I run HDMI from those two directly into the TV and select optical audio on the receiver?

Yes. Only hardware you need is an optical S/PDIF cable.

Yes, this is correct. 

 

OP, sorry I didn't expand on what was required. This is the simplest way of doing things IMO. It may be slightly more complicated if you're trying to use passthrough on the receiver as that's only 1080p... so IMO you'd be best connecting the ps4/appleTV directly to the TV, then selecting that output on the TV, then on the TV selecting sound output to the receiver.
