There was a time when laptops weren't chasing the Apple "thin, Thin! THIN!" and put solid keyboards on their laptops.

Hint to the non-Apple laptop makers: There are more metrics to your laptop than "thin"

I have one of these m17 r4 with the i9 and 3080 and I can say the cpu wellll with the voltage pulled back as far as it will go (you get a higher clock speed from this u gain 0.5ghz!!) seeing 4.8-5.1ghz on the cpu at 100c its always at 100c no matter what you do to its your getting 100c.... the gpu on the other hand is just a white wash am seeing 60c on the gpu 60c!! with a 100mhz oc on the core and memory power limit seems to be locked that or am missing something on how to unlock it which is impressive i dont have the cherry mx switches due to the reasons is the vid ie i didnt really trust them and £150 seems like a piss take to me but the mem keyboard is by fair and away the best kb i have used for a long time i had a cherry mx silent about 5 years ago basically when it came out on my old desktop rig and i would argue that this mem kb on the m17 r4 is better... but end of the day kb feel its personal choice no matter what same as audio you can have a 70k audio setup end of the day if you dont like the sound and prefer your £200 headphones thats your opinion very persons body works differently.

Could Dell possibly have royally screwed up the launch of this laptop worse than it already has???

 

I was online just the other day and the 4K display option is gone. You cannot configure it. Also gone for whatever bizarre reason is the Win 10 Pro option - you get home OS only.

 

As for the mechanical keyboard option that's gone too. Why the hell does a company market a product with features/specs that doesn't exist and they cannot deliver? Is this even a real shipping item or yet another month of May paper launch???

 

The selections available in their online configurator seem to change on a whim, most likely due to parts availability/shortage. It doesn't bother them that marketing a product with features/specs they cannot deliver is anti-consumer. Worse, Dell reps cannot even be bothered responding to the Q&A people are leaving on the product page. It's a fair question to ask when can we expect availability? Why do they release a product if the parts for it aren't available in sufficient quantities? Things like these should have been secured well before the day it went on sale.

 

I really wish Dell got their shit together, and I'm using those exact words because they think we as paying customers are the stupid ones. Message to Dell - sell fixed systems if you don't have the competence to make your laptops properly user-configurable!!! A company that treats its customers like idiots is a company that will fail.

I have the Alienware M17 R4 without  the Cherry MX switches, and it has the best laptop keyboard I've ever used, bar none.  I'd love to try the mechanical version, but I bought this thing before that was an option.  

 

That being said, I "only" paid about $3000 for mine after taxes by going with a 3080, 32 GB of RAM, and an i7.  My reasoning was that, with the i9, the overhead caused by the heat of said i9 would actually not give me THAT big of a performance boost as the processor wouldn't have enough room to really shine.  The i7 is 8 core, and, during gaming sessions, tends to sit at around 3 - 3.5 ghz, well above the base clock.  I doubt the i9 can stay boosted as long, and I'm able to comfortably play Cyberpunk with all of the settings maxed (including RT).  Though, I do have DLSS set to quality.  it's a smooth, good experience.  🙂

 

I'm saying all of this because I think it'd make for a really interesting video to compare the i7 and i9 versions of this machine to see if my theory is right.  It'd also be useful to shoppers who want the absolutely beastly GPU they've crammed into this thing because you may find out the extra money for the i9 isn't worth it.  🙂

 

Oh, the extra power is great too, since I hook mine up to an external display a lot of the time.

i work away from home 90% of the time all over the uk am doing best part of 70k miles a year and staying in hotels so a desktop for me is no option at all 3-4 nights a away i am away

In games?  I mean, during normal Windows tasks, I'm sitting around the 4.5 GHZ range, typically, but I find it . . . surprising that you're getting 4.8 - 5.1 GHZ while playing games.  What are your temps like?  Have you undervolted the thing?  I'm planning on doing that to mine, which should be a free bit of speed depending on what my silicon can handle, but with stock voltages, what you're reporting doesn't match the reviews of the i9 I've read.  Some said they were even experiencing screen flickering due to significant, sustained heat.  The i9 is just a hotter chip, so should throttle more than the i7 in mine.

 

I think my averages while playing Cyberpunk are sitting in the 4.1 - 4.3 range . . . if you're beating that average, then maybe my hypothesis on the i9 was just wrong 🙂  

I'd still be very interested in a performance review.  I think a lot of OEMs push the i9s as the penultimate gaming machine, but I'm insanely curious as to how much of a difference it actually makes in gaming.  Productivity I can see, but gaming?  I doubt it's a massive difference.

see below my under volt below i gained 0.5ghz from do so temps were there just funny no matter what if you got a game running its at 100c

Dell generally pulls configuration options if there is going to be a prolonged parts-shortage so I'd imagine that it will be added back in the future (the same goes for the MX-switch option and possibly also the 4k screen). It's a bit annoying but also keeps people from calling in and trying to order machines with components that are back-ordered.

How much?

The list price for the only one I can find is $9,543.99 which is too much for a nearly 5 year old laptop. Current seller. I have been thinking about upgrading from my old GT80 Titan. I fell for the meme that MSI pushed with it being "The first upgradeable laptop". They said it would support 10 series graphics, but when the MXM's for 10 series started shipping I couldn't find anything about it. I finally called their customer support back in 2019 and they said that because of this false advertising they offered $200 off of a 980 non M upgrade for a few months. I was unlucky enough to have called after that promotion was over, so they wanted $700 a piece for normal 980's in MXM.

 

The gpu power isn't the problem these days though. This thing sits at %100 cpu and 25 fps in flight simulator 2020. I have been looking at some other laptops, but I still just love the ridiculous form factor of the 21x and the screen. One of the things that initially sold me on the titan was the 18.4" screen instead of the normal laptop 17". 

 

Just curious if there is a price on it, or if Linus was just having a laugh. In the mean time I will keep watching if anyone gets stock of ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 17's with 3080's.
