Hey guys I just ran into a problem today, my friend brought a 2nd hand evga gtx 980 classified without knowing that it needs 8x8x6 pcie power cables and he doesn't have that, his non-modular power supply only has a 6x2 single power cable for the GPU so I was wondering if I can get 2 8pin Y splitters for the power cables so that it can turn the 6x2 to a 8x8x8.

Now the question is, is it dangerous? Will there be enough power coming through the single cable? I'll list the specs of my psu  Screenshot_2021-05-07-13-51-43-571_com.android.chrome.thumb.jpg.9dda2ae8312327dd8615726dbfbdfce8.jpg

I know it's a bad psu but I just want to know will it work? And what if it does what are the long term side effects?

Thank you guys!

That this PSU only has one 6+2 pin is for a reason. It's a low quality, groupregulated unit that you don't want to use on any system with dedicated graphics cards. 34A  @12v is about 400w so it's not even a 500w PSU for nowadays standards. Replace it for a decent PSU that comes with the recuired connectors for the videocard.

And yes, using splittercables is dangerous

Thats a very bad idea the graphics card needs alot of power and using an adapter may be dangerous and 100% will not work.

The 980ti is a good gpu so i do think its worth changing the PSU just to accomodate for the power draw it has.

gtx 980 fraws around 170w so using splitters will porbably work. Is it quaranteed? NO!. Is it safe? Probably not.

I Use my knowledge as business owner and self taught technician aswell as an AI to help people. AI might be controversial but it actually works pretty well 90% of the time.
