Hey LTT forums, I'm going off to college next year and wanted to build a pc this summer that will last me for that time. My graduation and birthday are this summer and my parents have agreed to pay for a graphics card if I can pay for the rest of the parts. I told them that if they cant find a 3060 ti then a 3060 or 2070/60 super would be ok for now. I want a little rgb, but not crazy. This is my first time doing all this so I had a couple of questions too before I buy:

1. Is a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO able to overclock i7-9700k. If not, is the MSI MAG 360R good choice?

2. Do I need a better than 650W PSU if i'm going to oc?

3. Any advice for building?

Not a 9900k.

Get this. The 11600K smashes a 9700K and is more futureproof and just as fast as a 9900k.

The Fuma 2 will allow for a decent OC.

The p360a and fans will be good airflow

Big nerd.

Theres no real point in buying a 9th gen cpu when newer products such as 5600x or 11400 exist with hyper threading and better overall performance. The cooler choice is quite a bit odd as well considering it's poor performing sleeve bearing and not worth it @ 32 USD whatsoever. LPX is as always overpriced and there are much better kits for cheaper. The ssd is just as overpriced.. For 134 USD you can get an SSD just as high-end and 500GB more.

Just saw @davemc and @Downkeymake some lists for you. Honestly either option is a great choice. It depends on your budget entirely though. If you were to ask me though I'd go with Downkeys build - PCPartPicker Part List
If you have the budget for it of course

definetely wouldn't go for this. 3700x gets outperformed/performs similar to the 11400 @ 180 USD and outperformed by the 5600x (same price) The ram is overpriced and there are better options for cheaper (in terms of XMP/stability) Along with the poor performing/value cooler and the B450 board.

I would happily go for 5600x if it's available. 212 is enough for 3700x / 5600x.

B450 boards are heavily discounted, a Bazooka for $80? that's a steal.

11400 is an option for similar performance, 212 is enough but there r better options (bearing and noise normalized performance) for a similar price point. b450 baoozka for 80 usd is a good deal i cant argue with that
Edit: 11400 is almost 120 USD cheaper along with B560 hdv- 85 usd (msrp) should be a lot cheaper if not readily available b560 pro4 (110=120 usd) is also an option

Thanks for the help! I did all my research in class on a school Chromebook, which blocked most of the reliable cites. I wanted the cooler because I started with less budget and never changed it. I also looked at WD blue ssd. Do you think cache matters because thats the only difference between it and 970 evo?

cache isnt the only difference, nand type and controllers are also different. 970 evo is a fast ssd granted but i doubt you'll be using those speeds for your work load. just use an mp33 512GB // 1TB

I'm going to front mount the aio and use included phanteks fans as exhaust.
