BIGSUR runs slow on iMac MID 2014

I have a iMac 21" Mid 2014 but BIGSUR runs slow on it.  Is it worth upgrading the hard ware like disc to SSD and RAM maybe or is there something else I can do to improve performance? I only use it for simple tasks browsing etc as I have other apple kit.

macOS Big Sur was never designed to run on an HDD. If you have an HDD as a boot drive, it's worth spending the money to upgrade it to an SSD, and you should do it ASAP.

The RAM cannot be upgraded in your iMac. You can replace the mechanical hard drive with an SSD if you'd like, and you'd notice a major improvement.

A SSD upgrade will be the best approach to extend the useful life of your mac.

It will also greatly improve the speed.

It's plausible that you already have an SSD, this model did come configurable that way, though it's unlikely and you would probably know since it would only have 256 GB of storage space. RAM is not independently replaceable, so you would have to replace the logic board for that (not worth it). I would definitely say an upgrade to an SSD is your best bet. There might also be issues with your HDD slowing it down, or software issues. But I still recommend the SSD even if that's the case.

8GB was the only option available. The RAM amount can't be changed.

You're right. Skimmed over that part of the specs sheet, looks like it uses a weird module for this anyways.
