Shouldn't video interlacing improve graphics performance?

     My logic is that the GPU would be drawing half as many pixels in interlaced mode thus improving performance. For example; Frame1 would be drawn to line1, line3, line5, etc... and Frame2 would be drawn to line2, line4, line6, etc... and frame drawing would alternate like that.

     Years ago when I used to use Windows, I set the Intel control panel to interlaced mode thinking performance was going to be improved. It only made everything feel more sluggish. I was confused why it didn't work like expected at the time and forgot about the idea. Recently I started wondering about it again.

     So why don't games and other 3D software do this idea of interlacing? I've never seen an interlacing setting in games, nor heard of it. I would be happy to deal with interlacing artifacts if it meant significantly better performance. Is my logic flawed?

Because interlacing doesn't decrease the amount of frames rendered. Interlaced video at 30fps runs at 60 half-fields per second; the output framerate is the effective rate.

Modern displays do not support interlacing, so video would have to be deinterlaced before displaying, introducing artifacts and latency.

 

Interlacing was initially used because of bandwidth limitations. It allowed for higher refresh rates at higher resolutions vs progressive, but had drawbacks that were acceptable at the time. Today, there is no real reason to use interlaced video imo. You are better off running the game at a lower resolution and using upscaling if you need additional performance, like how DLSS works.

Like checkerboard rendering?  We already have that. 

But tech like DLSS or FidelityFX is superior imo.

iirc RE2 Remake has also option to run at 1080i , not sure if that's the same thing though.
