Yes.

 

Boot a Ubuntu live CD and do:

find /dev -name "sd*"  -exec dd if= /dev/zero of='{}';

Unplug any disks you dont want to wipe.

 

It can take a little while depending on the size and performance of the disks.

I've heard that DBAN is a good open source software to use, and since it's open source... It's free! But i'm not so sure about this kind of stuff, I've never really had to erase all my data from a hard drive before. And if you're looking to completely erase all information form a disk, you can't, there's always gonna be some information/ data on those disks floating around that wasn't able to be completely erased or at least half of it did.

remember that if you're using an SSD, it's impossible to shred a file

the only option is to shred the whole SSD (not phisically, just ALL the data on there, also reducing the lifespan by doing such a big write operation)

A Hammer. If you want to keep the hard drive for further use then do what others are saying. But my way is the only 100% way. Just smash and break the shiny disks inside (pretty fragile actually)

it's not safe, that won't guarantee that you're writing over what you're trying to shred

the OS will just write your cliparts wherever he wants to put them

Yea, zero's are more effective than 1's and 0's. Data that the prying eyes will take as valid and not look again versus zero's they know something is up and will dig deeper.

If your doing a whole drive I would use DBAN, if your doing a group of files and want to keep the OS intact that's gonna be really hard to erase it completely.

Modern hard drive platters are so dense that you cant see what was last written to the sectors. Sure, it might have worked on early disks, but it is not going to work on modern ones. It also costed a fortune to do. Why would somebody bother? If hes just wanting to wipe it to sell it then the quickest way is going to be to write zeros to it.

Writing zeros over it is going to do the exact same thing as filling it with images. The command i posted is still the smartest way to do it that has been posted in this thread. DBAN uses the same technique, but has a pretty little menu.

Well buy a hard drive forensic kit, find the file handle which points to the actual sectors and then change the values of the sectors, change to all zero's, one's or 0.5's .

But since that will probably cost too much for you, just delete the file and empty the trash like everyone else does, if its top secret or some porn you have and seriously don't want anyone to see/read, then buy a hammer and end its life.

I'd prefer to instead write bogus lame passwords in the file instead of mine and call it a day, change the login/username as well, let trolls looking at it waste their time, faster than using a zero writer/reformat/etc.
