So I have this strange problem where if I play games my monitors randomly go black and turn back on after a while and it says that the GPU driver timed out.

Sometimes it also goes black and just doesnt come back and then my pc is in this strange state where it is still kinda on but nothing is on the screens and I cant do anything.

I really need help with this I have no Idea what could be the cause I really hope its not the GPU dying

Things I have tried: Re installing GPU drivers , not using any gpu drivers at all

Judging from this statement have you had the card for a while and this is a new problem, or did you pick this up used?

What sort of motherboard are you running this card on?

So I have this card for about 2 years now and it was bought new and I am running a Asrock x370m pro4 and this problem developed in the last few weeks it occured for the first time after someone in VR chat crashed me

Well that rules out a newer motherboard trying to run gen4 by accident or something like that. Have you tried pulling the card and reseating it and it's power connectors? Pretty unlikely that's the problem though. Are you running any 3rd party software that could be automatically applying an overclock like msi afterburner?

Have you done a bios update or anything recently? Could try rolling back any recent major windows feature updates as well, possible that something is causing this rather than just hardware

Sometimes a windows reinstall can fix things that ddu can’t. I’d suggest that.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

I have had MSI afterburner instaled previously but havnt set any overclock in it at all I just adjusted some fan curves but It is also uninstalled from my computer at the moment and I havnt done any bios updates recently but I could try re seating the card and its connectors

I have done a Windows re install 2 days ago allthough it was only the one that keeps personal information should I try the full reset?

If you have a spare drive it would be interesting to see if a clean install of windows exhibits the same behaviour

edit: it's a good way to rule out any possible software causing the issue. You could also try a few different drivers rather than just the newest one from AMD

I could see if I cand find a seperate drive but one problem with that would also be I dont really have anything that causes it like instantly it is really random when it crashes

kind of reminds me of the issues I used to have with my 5700xt so I'm wondering if its a similar issue. Is your card a dual bios type? If yes a quick way to check would be to just power down and throw the bios switch over to the other bios

Yeah, I’ve had that fixed with a full install (my 480 did that)

in the mean time I’d go into adrenaline and try to underclock/volt it to make it more stable

Just lower the clocks on all of the power states under the tuning tab of adrenaline.

I think there is, although reddit isn't exactly the best source. I posted a link to what I quickly found, powercolour's website and manual don't really tell you much

(1) My RX580 has this button. What does it do ? It is a Powercolor Red Dragon RX580 just received it today and while i wait for my cpu i noticed the little button there in the corner with nothing in the manual about it. : pcmasterrace (reddit.com)

Had the same problem bought a MSI RX 580 8 gig Armor X gpu all was ok but after 2 months had the same problem start to happen. Only way I could correct this problem

was to shut the computer down was by shutting it down by cycling the psu switch then it would boot up ok, Happen about a 8 to 10 times when watching YouTube

or when browsing different sites, YouTube was the worst.

Could not find the cause, after getting frustrated I changed the 16 gigs of Corsair  memory D4 3200 C16 4AMD and the MSI RX 580 Armor X. With 16 gigs of Gskill Rip Jaw D4 3200 And a Asus RT 5500XT 8 gig gpu. This did correct the problem. haven't yet put the RX 580 back in to see if it would repeat the problem.

Asus  ROG Strix B450F mob, Ryzen 7 2700X cpu .This is a budget build.

Not sure if this will be any help but you are the 1st person I have run across with the same problem. Love to hear how things go with you finding what's causing the

problem.

yeah, you just turn off the pc, flip the switch on the card, and then boot back up. It will use the other bios, which may have less agressive clocks and fan profiles but ultimately it will be a good way to test if the other bios has gone bad as well

edit: basically if you're still getting the same behaviour it rules out the cards bios. It is possible the less agressive bios settings might prevent the card from crashing as well if your gpu or memory is degrading

Could just keep using this secondary bios, or you could flip the switch back and try your hand at reflashing that bios version. Finding the tool and bios to flash it with is a pain though. Maybe power colour support could help you out with that part? I don’t have much experience with them personally

Yeah this is an update I dont think that is neccessary as the drivers timed out again still using the secondary bios
