Silent Server

So my current server is currently comprised of:

 

MSI z87 G43 

Intel G3220

8GB Corsair Vengeance (in blue ofc to match the mobo even though you cant see it)

Fractal Define Mini Silence edition

500w Silverstone Strider 24x7 rater PSU

64gb Vertex 4 boot SSD

4x3tb WD Reds in Raid 10

 

 

Now, the case is relatively quiet, but not silent. 

 

The main problem is currently I am using the intel stock cool (which is pretty shit)

 

Is there a passive cooler that would work with this setup? I'm not so worried about temps as the computer is idle most of the time unless computers backing up or I am streaming movies/music - the CPU is under very little load

 

Or any super quiet coolers? Maybe using the noctua? maybe something like a single rad like the h80i?

 

I would love to make this computer inaudible

I have an NH-L9i in one of my servers, works perfect and you can't even hear it. If only they made a cooler like that that fits a 1U case.

Undervolt and slightly underclock the CPU, put a strong static pressure fan as the front intake (Hyperborea, NFF12, Scythe GT), seal the side, and put a silence optimized fan as the exhaust like the stock Fractal fan. 

 

Put a hyper 212 in there with no fans mounted. 

 

letting the CPU exceed safe temperatures for a short amount of time is no big deal. Be sure it has lower clock profiles enabled. 

 

The amount of time that it's under load by your description is brief enough that thermal accumulation (technical term escapes me) shouldn't be a problem.  

 

you might want to mod in a very slow fan running at 5v, like the Fractal fans again which are inaudible at 5v but don't move much air, which is perfect because the drives need some air but not very much at all.

The reviews say it is silent, its full of big heat pipes and the whole thing is like a heatsink

 

Its not really off topic - its pretty much  a NAS - its running WHS 2012 (which I got legitimately for free, hurray student software) and its used for backing up my whole familes PCs/laptops/ipads/iphones, also runs an iTunes server so we can play our library as if it was our own personal spotify.

 

It hosts its own website so I can remote access/backup anywhere, handy since some of my family live a few hundred miles away

also experimenting with using it to install all my steam games too - I have mapped it as a drive to my gaming laptop and sucessfully run borderlands 2 with no loss of performance over standard gigabit ethernet through my asus gigabit switch
