cpu runs too hot at idle

ronko ren

just finished building my first gaming rig, and i think i have a problem with temperatures.

im running 3 exhaust fans on top and 3 intake on bottom (unifans) on 1350 rpm, as well as 2 exhaust on my radiator running on pwm.

while downloading cyberpunk 2077 earlier today, i noticed my cpu temp rose to 55-58C on 6% load.

even without downloading, on regular 1-3% load my CPU runs at about 40-45C with the rad fans running at about 800 rpm.

im really afraid to try and run games in this state.

i have 2 suspicions i would like you to confirm or rebute:

1. i didnt put enough thermal paste, or it got smeared too much when trying to add the pump on the cpu.

2. the pump isnt working. i hear no sound from the pump itself so im not sure if its even moves liquid in the tubes.

also my gpu runs a little hot at about 45C at 10% load.

OS: windows 10 64bit

gpu: 3080 FE

cpu: ryzen 5 5600x

MB: asus x570 prime pro

psu: corsair sf750

aio: lian li galahad.

fans: 6X unifans.

case: lian li o11 dynamic mini.

temps are 100% normal and expected. The way AMD has tuned Ryzen 3000 and 5000 series is to be AMP'd to the max at idle ready to start a 100 yard dash, but when it starts.. it realizes its running a marathon and dials everything back to where it should be.

Those are perfectly fine idle temps. Also, you should never be afraid to stress a system, even if you're not 100% confident in the cooling. Modern computers are smart enough to shut down before they get too hot to damage themselves.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

Probably OK,

What are the temps under full load?

thing is, i saw a fan configuration guide by christopher flannigan, where he got CPU temp 38C in idle, and GPU temp 26C. and i saw a reddit post showing that CPU temps above 50C at idle are a disaster. thats why im a little hesitant to accept it so quickly.. but ill try running cyberpunk and see what happens.

Every CPU has a different heat output,so it varies from CPU to CPU,and depends on the cooler you use as well.

With the CPU you have and the cooler you have,it's impossible without a compromise (Noise for example, lots of noise)

It depends on the temperatures under full load,as long as the idle temperatures are consistent, there is no reason.

65C idle temps and lower is  OK.

I would set the pump to 12V non-PWM mode or if you use a fan profile, to 100 % all the time. If you have the pump set like the fan speed or on auto, you will loose the advantage of the larger radiator because water flow inside will be severely reduced.

Did you try turning up the pump speed?

how do i do that?
better yet, how do i even know what my pump speed is?
