We want a NAS for a small data intensive business. We've come up with a list, but I'd appreciate if anyone can point out mistakes / better options

Requirements:

  • capacity for 100TB space (we already have storage devices, but ideally it should be upgradable to 100TB space)

  • 10Gb ethernet output (must have for fast transfer)

  • Ability to back up locally and on a server (aws or other)

  • Ability to have fast SSD cache (preferably m.2 or something fast to make use of 10Gbps ethernet)

  • Ideally ability to encrypt the drives

This is the list of components we've come up with:

What drives are you planning on using?

Have you looked at other brands or options as well. Id look at computers also. Qnap, ixsystems, and others has competors. Or you can get a dell 2u box and run windows server/linux on it.

HOw are you accessing files, SMB? ISCSI? NFS?

What local backups are you backing up to, the synology boxes should be doing that fine.

I do maintainance for the RS3617rpxs for time to time, they are great to have.

Especially if you have 2 of them, then you can just set them up in a HA configuration which theres an tool in snology store.

In regards to the requirements, the server can do all of that  with its left hand no probs

Be carefull though, the fully equipped nas with drives can easily crush your toes if you are not careful 😄  i.e its very heavy

be sure to book extra 5 year warranty for the nas

it comes in handy, I had the issue that 1 slot didnt accept any mem, so we had to send it back after 4 years, got a completely new unit for that.

the synology team doesnt mess with enterprise customers, and are always very helpfull in terms of support
