Wi-Fi vs ethernet

slamuffin

Hello everyone,

I know the default answer is "hardwired is the only way everyone else is stupid" BUT, I'm new to the PC gaming world and my new PC in office is not hardwired. I have wifi6 aka ax (router and computers Wi-Fi)  and I have gigabit internet. The question is,  is should I really run my 50 foot Ethernet into my office while gaming? The signal goes through one wall and connects at 700 mbps minimum  up and down with 1 ms latency... I play fps mostly.  What gains do I really get of I run a cord down my hallway?  I feel like I'm good over Wi-Fi....

if you feel like your internet is slow, then add ethernet. If your setup is good and working for you, just don’t change it. You don’t have to add ethernet if everything you are doing would seem exactly the same but with a massive cable.

imo Wi-FI is totally fine for your setup. While I personally use ethernet it's easier for me as my router is in the same room as my computer. If you feel the need to have the extra 300 Mb/s of bandwidth / the slightly decreased latency of a cable then you may want to give it a shot, but it seems like more hassle than its worth to switch to ethernet.

I would recommend getting a decent Wi-Fi 6 card/interface for your PC if you haven't already so you can take advantage of the faster wireless connectivity your network provides.

Wifi has been fine for gaming for awhile. Its only problematic when signal needs to go through thick concrete slabs, like several walls or floor/ceiling. Also some online games have rather unforgiving tick-rate where any slightest hiccup in connection will cause issues.

I had a similar issues as my router was in the next room, and i didn't feel like the wi-fi signal was as reliable.

I ended up having to buy a 15 metre ethernet cable to run from my junction box, along the two walls of my living room, under the carpet, into the next room, then along another wall, and into my router.

Hassle, yes.

But, I prefer it hard wired and so it was worth the small amount of time and money.

As others have said, unless you feel like you are not getting the best experience it is fine to just stick with wi-fi.
