Ideal cooler for a Ryzen 7 2700X.

Fatih19

I currently uses the box cooler but wanted to upgrade in pursuit of reducing noise. I was thinking of a Noctua NH-U12S, but I've seen techtubers uses that to cool Ryzen 9 and even Threadripper, so it may be overkill for my CPU. Any suggestions as to what I should use?

Main Rig :

Ryzen 7 2700X | Powercolor Red Devil RX 580 8 GB | Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3 | 16 GB TeamGroup Elite 2400MHz | Samsung 750 EVO 240 GB | HGST 7200 RPM 1 TB | Seasonic M12II EVO | CoolerMaster Q300L | Dell U2518D | Dell P2217H |

Laptop :

Thinkpad X230 | i5 3320M | 8 GB DDR3 | V-Gen 128 GB SSD |

Just go stock. No reason not to really. If you really want a third party cooler, maybe a thermalright macho rev b/c (for around $40-$50 USD), uhhh a se224xt maybe, a sctyhe mugen 5/ 5 black?

I know that the stock cooler is fine, that I completely understand. My current setup with 2 Noctua NF-P14 Redux as intake and an NF-A12 as outtake has my CPU on 38 degree idle. But I want to reduce the noise to a minimum.

Scythe Fuma 2 /ninja 5 for minimum noise

I checked the pricing in my region and apparently the Noctua NH-U12S is only a few dollars more expensive than the Schyte Fuma 2, so I think I'll be getting the Noctua.

Apparently the Fuma 2 is a lot more quiet and is within spitting distance with the U14S. So I guess I'll be getting the Fuma 2 instead.

If you don't go for the Chromax (black) ones, pretty sure you can get a NH-D15 for ~$75.

My workstation/gamer: Ryzen9 5900X@5Ghz, AC Freezer2 280mm AIO, ASUS TUF X570PRO, RTX3080Ti FE, 32Gb TridentZ DDR4-3600C14, M.2 1Tb WDSN850, M.2 1Tb WDSN550, 2x 8Tb WD80EFAX, Corsair HX850, LianLi O11 Air Mini + 3x NF-A14's, Gigabyte M27Q (27"/1440P/170Hz), Asus PA248 (24"/1200P/60Hz), Dell WFP2408 (24"/1200P/60Hz), G815 kbd, G502 mouse, Sony WH-H910N, ModMic Wireless.

The NH-D15 is 50 percent more expensive than the Fuma 2 in my region unfortunately. And I don't think it fits my mATX case. The clearance is 155 mm.

If you're referring to the Q300L, 158-160mm coolers like the NH-U12A, Hyper 212 Evo, and Dark Rock 4 seem to fit just fine. https://pcpartpicker.com/builds/by_part/rnGxFT#h=172509,196660,8649,196659,230479

I'm going to sidegrade to a Thermaltake Versa H18 in the near future.

The Versa H18 seems similar in that regard. https://pcpartpicker.com/builds/by_part/dgndnQ#h=196660,8649,196659,19223,262078

The NH-D15 is 165 mm tall with the fan. Which is 10 mm taller than the clearance in the Versa's product page.

Ah, I was just clarifying the amount of clearance available and wasn't recommending the NH-D15. The NH-D15 heatsink is 160mm tall and the center fan can be entirely lowered into the heatsink though.

That is true. But it's too expensive and overkill, considering I use my CPU at stock.

I did look through the build posted and 2 of them had a Noctua NH-U12S, which is 3 mm above the spec but seems to fit just fine for the 2 build there. That's strange.

There's usually a bit more clearance than listed to account for manufacturing tolerances.

Fair enough. It'll be case clearance above motherboard that will be a factor, not motherboard size, but yes, you'll need to keep an eye on case clearances.

Also bear in mind the heatsink clearance versus the fans... I agree that on paper, the NH-D15 is pretty extreme as the first intake fan officially sits about 20mm above the centre one... But the heatsink is a similar height to competitors, it's still a great cooler with only the centre fan or my approach was to mount the first intake a lot lower on the fins.... So I only needed 150mm above my low profile memory... Which won't be an option for some.

Sounds like you'll be space constrained, even taking that into account, I just wanted to mention it as I was about to abandon the idea of a big Noctua as I was put off by the prices of 140mm Chromax coolers, but then saw the 150mm traditional Noctua coloured one was a LOT cheaper (and marginally better at cooling!)....
