Games feel choppy / not smooth (High FPS / 144Hz)

Hello, everyone!

First time posting here.

So, I have one very strange problem and I have searched a lot and a lot but nothing really helps.

So my problem is that I'm playing games on 100+ FPS all the time (depends on the game, mostly around 120-140) but they feel really choppy when I'm moving my mouse fast.

When I make some slow movements with the mouse It's not that bat and noticeable but when I start move fast, oh boy..

In CSGO its is most noticeable, here is a short clip: https://streamable.com/uiraw4

On the video its not that bad but in person, it's horrible.

I've tried so many solutions, like change the usb ports of the mouse, play with the nvidia settings, gsync on/off, low latency on/off, vsync fast, disconnecting my 2nd monitor to see if there is any differences because I saw a bug that people were talking about a few years back, nothing helped.

The strange thing is that when I played today CS:GO at 1 time I was dead and spectating a teammate and he started moving his mouse fast and noticed no choppy gameplay, it was smooth and I was like "wtf?".

So here are my pc specs:

asrock b450 fatality gaming

ryzen 5 3600

gtx 1080

Kingston HyperX Fury 2x8GB 3200Mhz

the mouse is steelseries rival 300, I have some good game pad, I tried using a different one but nothing changed.

the monitor I'm using is Asus VG279Q, 27 144hz IPS. I'm noticing some ghosting imo but not really sure.

Well, I'm not really posting into the forums but I really cannot find a solution to this problem.

Thanks in advance and have a nice day. 🙂

Sounds like you don't actually have the adaptive sync enabled. It needs to be enabled on both the monitor and in the Nvidia control panel. It's also usually not available if you're using other features like black frame insertion (if your monitor has that, not sure).

Quick input like moving the mouse around real fast is typically going to cause frame dips, and if you don't have a variable refresh it'll tear.

I'd suggest using mega or make it so people don't have to log in into google just to watch a video.  Btw if you upload the original file mega has no compression whatsoever it's quite glorious.

Anyway,  I'm not sure if the mouse is causing this,  its possible,  like polling rate or something,  but just to make sure you have Gsync enabled, vsync disabled,  set your Nvidia settings to the correct refresh rate, and can confirm Gsync is actually working?

I had similar issues with Gsync,  different game and I would never use a mouse to play a video game,  but the issue seems to be similar,  in this case i fixed it by randomly changing resolutions and motion blur settings in game,  i doubt it's applicable in your game,  though probably worth a try.  (game in question was Tekken 7 if someone's wondering lol)

For me, I find that the best settings to use for a smooth experience are:

Gsync: On

Framrate limit: 160 for 165Hz, 140 for 144Hz

Vsync: On (not Fast)

Low Latency Mode: Ultra

If that doesn't feel smooth, then it could be one of two things.

  1. Assets loading in as you move through the game world causing framerate dips.
    • Would point to a storage/memory limitation.
  2. Input device issue.
    • Increase your polling rate, mess with your Windows sensitivity vs your DPI settings. Generally you want the Windows setting as low as possible and the DPI setting higher to get the best interpolation.

Hello, thanks for posting.

My mouse rate is 1000, I think I read somewhere 1000 is the best for G-Sync or something like that.  I tried playing with lower pooling rate but the problem is still the same.

Hey.

Adaptive sync is enabled on my monitor and I don't have many functions on it so I think it should not have any other background function that prevents it. And it shows that is ON.

Hello, yeah I didn't really knew google drive wanted people to login to be able to view/download stuff. Uploaded the video to a different site for easy access.

I've played before with the pooling rate, now is on 1000 - not really noticeable difference imo.

I've tried playing with the settings:

G-sync on/ff , vsync on/off, low latency mode off/ultra. Nothing really made a big difference.

My settings are the same, only the fps limiter is set to 142 but still I feel this choppy gameplay when moving my mouse fast on every game, most noticeable in competitive games like CSGO , Valorant etc

Assets loading in as you move through the game world causing framerate dips.

I bough recently a samsung SSD and installed everything on it, so I think we can remove the hdd as a problem.

As of the ram, I've played some time back playing with only 1 stick or both (dual channel) but only made my game more stutter when playing with 1 stick, no big difference.

Input device issue

Tried to play with the pooling rate settings - nothing. Hmm, maybe I'll try that, I'm playing right now on 400 DPI and like 2 sens in game, but I don't really think that is a problem since so many pro players are playing with these settings.

Sorry for double posting but I didn't to post 1 big reply.

I don't know how to explain it, its not like the game freezes for 1s while playing, it runs file but when I move my mouse it's not smooth like I've seen people playing it on 144hz. It feels like playing on 60Hz but I've tried playing on 60Hz and It's 10x worse than now, so Its most likely running 144hz, I've checked several time and It says its running on 144hz.

Basically it feel like tearing, ghosting and low hz when I move my mouse fast.

I've check the frametime with what problem (ah, I forgot its name), checked for hardware temps and everything is fine. No frames are dropping, just doesn't feel smooth.

No, my fps is consistent, no fps drops. The frametime is also consistent and no spikes to see. The games aren't freezing like stuttering, they are not smooth on fast mouse movement.

Ok, then A make sure Gsync is actually working, maybe with another game too... some games and some drivers apparently have issues with Gsync... because we need to B eliminate the possibility Gsync simply doesn't work perhaps because what you're saying is exactly what happens with no Gsync (Vsync *should* actually fix that though,  so that remains a bit mysterious)

Idk  on my monitor OSD it does say "adaptive refresh rate on/off"  and also shows the refresh rate in real time, that's how I can be fairly certain it works properly,  also when I had this issue with Tekken this was very uneven and 'jumpy'. Also playing over HDMI with vsync on completely fixed it... so in hindsight it probably was Gsync actually not working correctly...

You could try what I did, change the resolution,  higher than usual with DSR or whatever also if the game has motion blur turn it on... play for a while and then change it back however you want.

I mean seriously those two things were the only thing that had any influence on the issue,  nothing i did in nv panel or my monitor did anything...

Yes, i know it's weird but give it a try and keep Gsync on while you do that.

The direction tells you... the direction

Hey, thanks for posting again.

I know the G-Sync kind of is working because I too have a showing Hz on my monitor, without G-Sync it stays table 144hz but with G-Sync it matches the FPS, if the FPS is below 144 then it will lower the Hz of the monitor. I tried playing on HDMI and Displayport but its still the same. I'm now still using the Displayport cable which I got from the monitor and the HDMI for my 2nd monitor.

I'll try with the resolution and the motion blur to see if it will help somehow, thanks.

With all of the detail you have provided, namely:

  • You are using the best Gsync/Vsync settings in NVIDIA Control Panel.
  • You are sure your monitor has GSYNC enabled because of the variable Hz displayed.
  • You are monitoring frame times and you are not seeing dips. They are consistent.
  • You have checked that your input devices are not the cause.
  • You have fast storage and enough RAM.

Its sounding more like this issue is on the display side of things. So either a faulty cable or a faulty monitor. It's also possible that you are more sensitive to frame time variance than the average person. If it were me, I'd start by trying a different DisplayPort cable. I know you have tried HDMI, but Gsync is designed for DisplayPort, not HDMI.

Hmm, I think the best solution for now is checking the cables, i'll buy a new one these days. Is there any type of cable that I need to look like brand or just any DP cable?

Also the pros are also more sensitive to the frame time but still they have buttery smooth gameplay. Well probably because they have the best gear, idk.

Will try with the cable these days and reply. 🙂

Just bought a new DP cable and no differences.

I'm really out of solutions to the problem.

What about ram? Can the ram cause such things like game not being smooth (its not stuttering, the game doesn't freeze, the fps is not dropping)?

It just feel like not playing on 144hz (maybe?)

I got the exact same problem, I've tried all kinds of settings, new cables, vsync on/off, gsync on/off, and I can't get a smooth experience.

In my case it is a Laptop i7-8750hH with GTX-1070, connected to a 75Hz monitor, getting stable FPS andFrameTime, no thermal throttle issues, and still not smooth experience.

On the other hand I have a desktop with a Ryzen 5 1400 and RX 580, connected to the same monitor and they deliver a totally butter smooth gaming.

I've tried so many settings that I think I've given up already.

BRO TRY CHANGING YOUR RESOLUTION TO "1024x768", IT HELPED ME WITH THAT PROBLEM IN VALORANT. THE DISPLAY WOULD LOOK LIKE A LITTLE BIT STRETCHED BUT IT'S MORE PLAYABLE AND SMOOTH. IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO CUSTOMIZE RESOLUTION, TRY WATCHING TUTORIALS ON YOUTUBE. GOODLUCK BRO.

Heeellloo. I had exactly the same problem. It feels like you dont have 144(240) hz it feels like you have 60 . But for sure you are 144(240) and with stable fps

My pc

i7 9700k

RTX 2070

Ballistix sport lt 3200

Samsung evo 970

Chieftec Protone 750w

I have tried many things

- Changed SSD to Samsung

- Changed windows like 100 times

- Changed GPU to 1060

- Changed SSD to m2

- Changed memory

- Changed Motherboard

- Changed monitor to 240 hz from 144

- Tried another Internet connection

I was trying to cap fps at 237 and pn gsync or off gsync

I tried all settings in Nvidia Panel

I googled about this problem

many times.

I checked my FpS framerate , everything was so fine.

I was playing fortnite and csgo .  Later in Valorant game the same problem , its just not smooth as it has to be.

Some of my friends had the same problem .

I found in Cis community that a lot players have the same but still no fix .

They even recorded some videos on YT and asked big Youtuber to help.

I didnt find the solution.

I even move to another house to test it . Didnt help also . I was thinking that the problem is electricity and grounding. Guys from CIS community even tried to make your own grounding .

I don't know what the problem was anymore, there are not many options.

- CPU

- Power Supply

- It may be that the computer is infected with bad electricity and something breaks down.

Fortunately or unfortunately, I gave up and sold my computer.

A year later, I want to build a computer from 0 and hope that this problem will not come.

Before I buy it, I call an electrician to make all the measurements in my apartment, subdue the sockets.

Hope guys one day we will find the solution.

Im sorry for my English . Sometimes I used a translator . 😒

hey I had this same issue. after troubleshooting for hours, I found out that my ram was running on 2133 instead of its usual 32-3600. I'm not sure why it was on 2133 but after changing it in the bios my games ran fine. Hope this was the issue, good luck.
