Why can't you simply unplug the headset from one PC and plug into into the other, depending on which one you want to use?

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

What type of plug does your heatset use?

3.5mm, USB?

yes it uses 3.5mm jack

You can either get some sort of switch, there are dozens available online, but I can't really vouch for any model.

Another option you have is you can hook up the two PC's together with a 3.5mm cable.

You wire the green connector up to the blue connector of the other PC. The PC with the blue connector can now receive the audio from the other PC and you can set it up so it can listen to that audio.

This would only work when the PC with the blue connector is turned on though, so a switch of some kind if infinetely easier. (or just plugging in the headset from one PC to another).

Do keep in mind if you have a headset (headphones + microphone) you would need a switch that can also transfer microphone (so it needs to use a TRRS/4 pole connector), which can be pretty rare.

I have a 3.5mm jack to a 3.5mm jack and I thought I could connect the pcs but how do I do it?

You would wire it up like this:

image.png.fb5f038bbc84c993e813e984fc5e83f6.png

On PC1 you now go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound and do this:

Quote

Select Recording tab. Double click on Line In.
Choose Listen tab, check Listen to this device. Choose playback through Default playback device and click Apply button.
Choose Levels tab, turn on the speaker, select volume label etc.

Now you should hear the audio from PC2 in your headset, but also the sound from PC1. PC1 (if you connect the pink wire too/if you're using a TRRS/4 pole jack) will be the only one that has access to the microphone though.

Then the obvious solution is to just run Discord and the game on the same one, no?

Or wire it up as described above; whatever floats your boat.
