Microsoft Word Is Under A Hack Attack: Do Not Open Documents Named '.RTF'

microsoft-office.jpg

"Microsoft Corp. on Monday issued an emergency security warning saying that hackers have found a way to booby-trap certain common Word files with the .rtf extension....  This is the worst kind of attack. A hacker who manages to get you to open a booby-trapped file can gain control of your computer....Even scarier is that the hack could work in preview mode. That's where you don't actually open the file but view it in an email instead. Outlook, for instance, lets you preview attachments.

Microsoft is recommending that you block all .rtf documents from your computer. It released a free tool that will set that up for you"

Oh, wow. That's kind of unexpected...

I like the color scheme of Noctua fans. Deal with it. Forget about the bad memories of the past.

I wrote it in an afternoon as a rich text document... Couldn't be bothered to change it.

if you are just doing word documents, Why pay for an inferior product? ;)

and how would it affect their domains? If they don't click on the file, nothing should happen right?

Users will open emails and if the admin has not had a chance to implement some rules, Outlook will auto-preview the .rtf files and BAM!

Uh oh, I opened one on my uncle's pc (which im using now) yesterday...

I caught this too late, is there any solution?

not all .rtf's are boobytrapped, they just could be boobytrapped. Which means that you can usually trust older docs on your own pc and stuff your friends/collegues send you. But when some website sends you a .rtf don't even allow Outlook to preview.

Was it saved on removable media like a pendrive? Its common for Word to crash when working on documents for a long time that are located on removable media. Always work local, then backup to external.

Nope, all local. Not sure why but Word is just being a bit unstable. Typing it up on Google Docs so it's all saved as I type then I'll move it back to format because I like Word better for that.
