about modem/router

Go to solution Solved by Windows7ge,

IMO. No. Gaming in the context of a modem/router is just a buzz word. A gimmick. It won't improve your ping appreciatively.

What it may do is offer more features than your ISP router provides. Better Wi-Fi. More control over client access. It may offer traffic priority if you have a lot of clients and your ping goes up when everybody's online. But it doesn't have any special sauce that will increase your FPS.

Agreed. The only reason to get your own router with Spectrum is because you pay monthly for the router but not the modem only box, or at least you did last I checked 🙂

I am not 100% sure about this. I hear a lot of conflicting information about how it works.

I've heard:

  1. Sometimes the equipment is provided for free.
  2. The equipment is only ~$10/month (that is enough for food though)
  3. If you replace the equipment with your own they still charge you the rental fee.
  4. If you replace the equipment they drop the rental fee.

This isn't strictly Spectrum I'm speaking of though. I'm talking about ISPs broadly. I think it varies ISP to ISP so it gets confusing.

Yah, I've had Spectrum before and I know the modem only box is free but they charge $10/month for the router but they used to charge for the modem. They don't charge if you use your own stuff though (thankfully)
