So I have a old Compaq presario lying around, And I was wondering if I could build a relatively high end PC into that like a sleeper car.

sleeper is a car that has high performance and an unassuming exterior. Sleeper cars are termed such because their exterior looks little or no different from a standard or economy-class car. In some cases the car appears worse due to seeming neglect on the owner's part, typically referred to as "all go and no show". While appearing to be a standard or neglected car, internally they are modified to perform at higher performance levels.

So long as you carve in adequate ventilation it will work, I am mid way through modding an old antec case at the moment, already got 240mm rad mounting in the front, may carve the bottom out for either a 280 or 360mm in the bottom. The only thing to be warned about with old cases is they tend to use 1mm steel which can be quite flimsy.
