It's something that has been on my mind for a couple of weeks now as i am getting ready to start my first massive build. I have built over 150 systems over the past 10+ years mostly corporate stable platforms and some gaming but nothing considered enthusiast gaming and i want to get the build off to a good start with a descent plan before dropping lots of $$

It depends on your budget. Since you want to build an enthusiast gaming pc, I'll assume your budget is somewhere around $1000 to $2000. A good cpu would be the i5 3570k (Intel) or the FX-8350 (AMD). A decent GPU would be a GTX660 (NVIDIA) or a Radeon 7870 (AMD). For a PSU, I'd recommend a semi-modular of fully-modular PSU, with at least an 80 -plus bronze certification. For storage, I'd recommend a Hybrid HDD, which has the storage of a HDD with the speed of an SSD. There is a 1 TB Hybrid HDD from newegg for $113. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178340. A good case with cable management features would be from cooler master or Corsair. If you want to do air cooling, I'd recommend the Cooler Master V6 or V8; for water cooling, Corsair has really good self-contained loops. I'm afraid I don't know much about custom water cooling.
