I wanted to reinstall windows to get a clean start. So, I backed up my computer to my external hdd and then reinstalled windows. I formatted my boot drive so I would get a clean version of windows. So, at this point, my backups were on my external hdd and my main computer had nothing on it anymore. When I then plugged my hdd back in to recover my files from my backup, it was all gone. For some strange reason, after plugging my hdd in the entire drive was empty. Nothing was there. All my backups, pictures, documents, everything gone. I had about 100gb with of backups that dissapeared into thin air.

I tried using recuva and easus recovery software but none of those can find my backup files. it found the small files but none of them found the backup files which were about 90gb, 9gb and 1gb files.

I called drivesavers recalling LTTs video but their quote was 2000-8000usd. that is absolutely insane. I cannot afford that. What do I do??

Maybe your external hdd is corrupted. Don't try running any cmd commands on it, that  will fix it but it will remove the corrupted files.

I don't know much about great file recovery softwares, but I heard that stellar file recovery software is good.

If my answer is correct or is helpful please mark it as the solution. Quote me in your post to summon me. Beware that after summoning me ill never leave.

Is the hard drive you used to back up the files a SATA drive or a USB drive?

I did data recovery for a living.

Those prices are about average.

Install, to your main system (or try to find the portable if you can and use on a USB stick) ZAR.

Zero Assumption Recovery.

If that doesn't find anything, nothing you can buy as an individual will, and it's off to a data recovery specialist.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.
