Currently, I have a i7-4790k with Zotac 3070 and I'm looking for a upgrade as there's a severely bottlenecked at least In the game I primarily play.

I was wondering what would be the best processor to pair with it, just for gaming. I'd be happy to save a buck and I won't be upgrading the 3070 for at least another generation.

Also what ram would be best to pair it with.

I was thinking of the ryzen 5600X, but wasn't sure if that was too high end for my needs.

In the future I can't imagine video editing or anything other than gaming on this system.

$300 5600x

$50 air cooler

$150 B550

or

$200 10600k

$50 air cooler

$150 Z490

If you're playing 1080p or mostly MMO type games, the 5600x will perform better and make a lot of sense.

If you're playing 1440p or mostly AAA games, the 10600k will perform about the same but is $100 less, and also makes a lot of sense.

Good air coolers in the $50 range are things like Arctic Freezer 34 Esports Duo, Scythe Fuma 2 (a bit higher at $59),

i5-14600KF // 120x38MM Cooler Master AIO // B760i // 64GB DDR5 6000 // PNY RTX 5070 // Cooler Master NCORE 100 Max // Cooler Master V SFX-850 Gold // UWQHD AOC Display

That would a good processor to upgrade to. Combine that with DDR4-3600 CL16, a B450/B550 (or X470/X570 if you want these features over the B series boards) ,and a beefy air cooler or AIO (I prefer the former over the latter), you're all set to go with a 3070.

I play 1080p with a 240hz monitor, so i presume the $100 would be well spent to go for the 5600x

As of a few hours ago I now have a 3070 paired with a 10600k, and about to write something in user review section. I was going to comment further here, but with the 240 Hz requirement, the 5600X is probably the better choice. Do check if other people have done comparisons between the CPUs in whatever games you are interested in to be sure though, and understand what that difference is. I kinda swing the other way, now running at 4k120, but it is more 4k than 120fps.

Thanks for the help everyone, I just bought the 5600x, with the B550 & corsair vengence 16gb. Arriving tomorrow :).

- I also have a kraken x62, with the compatible AMD bracket which should serve perfectly still.
